Excited for Spring in Denver! Ready to Rumble In The Yard!

Denver is interesting. You have the downtown, skyscraper area… then a little further out is where we live, a sea of small houses with small yards. But our small 1930 Tudor works for us, and we love our compact patch of green. In fact, we’re lucky because actually have a patch and a half of green, meaning a bigger yard than many people have in our area.

When we moved in almost 13 years ago, that yard was a wasteland of weeds. This was before we had Dex, so much of spring and summer was spent fixing that problem. We dug, scraped, planted… until there was a lovely little oasis that made us forget the whirring noise of cars that pass by daily. I had flower pots everywhere – a nice mix of perennials and annuals to liven up the place as we moved on to work that needed to be done inside.

Then we had a baby, who turned into a toddler, and every year the yard was ignored a little more. And more. And more. Our raised bed garden was about the only thing we managed to keep up faithfully – to ensure we had fresh tomatoes every September. Usually I am in charge of flowers around the patio and yard, while Bryan manages the vegetables. Dex helped when he could – but you know how that goes. Mostly playtime with some seeds thrown here and there. Plus, given how sick I was in 2011, you can imagine how badly everything got the past few years.

But it’s a new year! I am finally feeling better and life is back on track. Dex is 10 and way more into things like science and nature and being an actual human being. We made a pact, all of us, to place a higher priority on the garden, the flowers and all the plants. That’s why I am so excited to work with Home Depot this Spring on some projects to beautify our yard.

You’ll be seeing a series of posts talking about things we are doing around here that match up with Home Depot’s online Garden Club – which is an area of their web site you can check out for projects (with video instructions!) and don’t forget to sign up for their newsletter that provides timely info on working in your garden and yard.

Denver is also famous for its volatile weather. You know how the saying goes, wait 15 minutes and it will change? Well, yesterday it snow flurried in Denver and tomorrow it will approach 70 degrees. Mother’s Day is usually our last bit of “frost-warning” time – yet it snowed on my wedding day… May 26th!

Bent Leaf

The boys and I think our crazy weather makes it more fun to live in Denver, but that – coupled with our very dry and hot summers make it harder to keep everything alive. That is not even taking my laziness into account. I love how Home Depot has some great projects for all climates and experience levels – like starting spring seedlings in recycled bottles.

We’ve even made Poe, the latest addition to our yard’s problems, promise to help. And by help, I mean not dig up everything we just worked on. It’s going to be hard for him, I grant you… but that sappy puppy-eye look is pretty much as close to a pinky-swear that a 75-pound Bernese Mountain Dog gets.

So we’re ready! We’re excited! We’re going to tackle our yard and probably film ourselves being idiots while doing it!

I would love to have any suggestions from you gardening/flower/yard/green thumb experts and just plain old cheering from people who enjoy watching others fumble around in dirt.

Since we just bought a house, landscaping is big time on my brain right now. We’re hiring someone to do a fence, because there are scary barky dogs next door.

The rest, I don’t quite know yet. We already have a deck covered in bird feeders, and a patio with seating and tables for 8, but I want flowers EVERYWHERE, (especially bird friendly ones, since birding is my thing)so that’s going to be the biggest task.

It’s a huge yard, over half an acre, so we have our work cut out for us!

I have a few ideas. My yard and flower garden ALWAYS feel so overwhelming though!

Every year I can be counted on to spend a small fortune at Home Depot – their plants are priced fairly and the people that work there are always willing to help! I am looking forward to your posts for inspiration this summer! Especially since you were born with the artsy eye – your color choices will be great !

I am so overwhelmed by our yard that I don’t even know where to start. Love watching you put yours together.

You are inspiring! I know that Home Depot has a pretty good nursery, and they have pavers and retaining walls. Now that Easter is behind us, I will survey my yard and perhaps see you at Home Depot! My mom was the green thumb. My thumbs have skulls and crossbones!

Yay y’all! Thanks for the support! Please be sure to post on your own blogs or Facebook about the progress you make too!

This looks *perfect* for me to find more info about planting a raised bed garden – which I’ve been saying I’m going to do for about 5 years now. Is this the year? 🙂

We are ready to rumble too! Will you be passing along any savings from Home Depot? That would be great!!

I’ll be in the same boat with our yard soon enough. I’m kind of daunted by it in all honesty. There is so much potential but as new home owners who live in rainy Seattle, we’ve been focused mostly on the inside of the house so far. Excited to see what you guys do!
