Denver Comic Con 2014

Note: Denver Comic Con provided media passes but we purchased additional tickets for the kids. All photos and words are mine.

So often I drag my son around to events and he has no idea what is going on. Denver Comic Con was the first event that he asked me to request passes for. HE asked ME. How could I say no, and WHY would I even want to? Comic Con is so up our alley, it is pretty shocking that we have never been before.

Of course we loved it.

Sure, it’s a little overwhelming with all the people and crazy costumes and sessions and figuring out your way around, but we just got in the mindset that we’d let Dex guide our choices, since it was his idea – and we felt more like we were floating on the ocean rather than getting bumped around by a pinball machine.

Dex and Bryan wanted to dress up but we ran out of time. In the end, they were glad they didn’t go half-way because so many people went ALL OUT. Sure, seeing famous actors, artists and technicians was amazing – but really what makes Comic Con special are the attendees. They take time with their costumes and are SO creative. I love the “come as you are” spirit that permeates the whole event. Like, “it’s OK to be different and we love you for it.”

One of the big sessions we attended was the 20th anniversary reunion of the Gargoyles cast. It was so fun to watch all these talented folks reminisce about the show – but the MOST fun was watching Jonathan Frakes and Marina Sirtis just be generally HILARIOUS.

Denver Comic Con also provided a “Kid’s Corral” area, full of crafts and activities for the younger set. What a perfect oasis for families, and I would have to say it was Dex’s favorite place of all – even at 11 years old.

We even got to meet Grayson Bruce, a true hero in my opinion. First time I have been star-struck approaching a ten year old, that’s for sure.

But maybe MY favorite moment was when Jim Cummings, the voice of Winnie The Pooh, Tigger, Darkwing Duck, the Tasmanian Devil and a million other characters had the kids do drawings for him. He then made up voices based on what they drew. The very last drawing he “animated” was Dex’s.

No, I didn’t cry at all.

Yup. Denver Comic Con rocked. We can’t wait for next year.

The boys are already working on their costumes.

These are the posts I love, I have a very “come as you are” and “it’s OK to be different and we love you for it.” 14 year old in an area that is very not “Come as you are” (an area where you must be SPORTY or RICH or you are not cool – Southern Denver Suburb from you – I’m sure u can guess where) – but he is happy and has a tight group of guys who are “different” and seeing you let your son embrace “who he is” is always inspiring .
Keeps my wife and my faith that our little world is just that – little. and one day he/they will be moving on and meeting more like them. (now if I can just convince them that these next 4yrs are so short and it will be over in a blink of an eye.)

What a nice comment, Kevin! And I feel your pain. I grew up in an area that was much like you are describing so I am proof that there is life afterwards! 😉

How fun! I need to bring the kids next year I guess???

    • Aimee

Absolutely! Some of the characters were a bit scary, but you get a taste of it from above. If you think the kids can handle it – it was very fun!
