Slow Caves at Lost Lake in Denver

2016 has been a weird year all around, but there are still many things to celebrate. A great example is Slow Caves. This band from Fort Collins (who have been all but adopted by Denver) made some major waves this year. They released a new video and were nominated for a 2016 Westword Music Award. The guys (comprised and two brothers and four friends) have played all over the state all year long. Just last month, the band landed a deal with Old Flame Records.

I got to see them at Denver’s Lost Lake recently – an intimate room in the Bluebird District that is bringing in great acts after shaking off its dive bar roots. Slow Caves is a great rock n’ roll  show; the band is young, talented, and sincerely nice people.

They embark on a quick West Coast tour in January and then return to Lost Lake in March.

Guess who will be there???

Denver band In The Whale headlines Larimer Lounge with One Flew West and CITRA in late 2016

Denver Bands: In The Whale, One Flew West and CITRA

I love the Denver music scene, right? I love it even more when every band on a show is local, and awesome. In particular, when long time friends In The Whale put on a show, since they are out on tour so much lately, it’s a priority to go see them no matter who they play with. But they had One Flew West and CITRA on the bill too – basically trifecta of awesome.

In The Whale are just two guys who somehow fill the room with great rock and roll. I still have no idea how they do it, but I think it has something to do with talent and grit. It’s been a thrill to watch them build a following all over the country at music festivals like Austin City Limits and Lollapalooza or supporting mega-acts like Jane’s Addiction and The Toadies. But when they come home, it’s still just two guys having fun playing music to a room full of friends.

Tiny Home Vacation in Colorado: Wee Casa

You have seen the shows about tiny houses, right? Have you ever stayed in one? Have you ever thought about a tiny home vacation?

A tiny home is typically under 500 square feet and they have become popular because of their small impact on the environment and our wallets.

We have a fairly small house ourselves, by American standards at least, and we love it. Less to take care of and more cozy.

That’s how we felt when we visited Wee Casa in Lyons, Colorado, recently. They are a friendly, low-stress tiny home hotel right near the entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park, with nearly 20 rental spaces parked in a community setting. Lyons is also home to the world famous bluegrass music festival, RockyGrass – which we have attended several times. (Next time we know where to stay.)

Your Tiny Home Vacation in Lyons, Colorado

Unit 10 was our (tiny) home for the weekend, which is 165 square feet on the main level and 70 square feet in the loft. Yes, tiny! But not as “small” as that seems.

It’s officially the holiday season in Denver! Alf announced the top ten bands for this year’s Hometown for the Holidays song contest at Not So Silent Night this weekend. They are listed in alphabetical order below with their song and social media links. I am lucky to know several of them but can’t wait to cheer them all on as KTCL Channel 93.3 starts putting their songs on the air. The free HTFTH concert (unless you want the VIP upgrade) is December 17 at The Summit. Previous winners AMZY are headlining and the top three bands (as voted by us music nerds!) will battle it out for the top prize. See you there? Continue reading…
