Every year, Denver Westword puts on a crazy extravaganza called Artopia. It's a celebration of art, culture and fashion at The Church, which - if you have never been - is inside what formerly was an actual church. Dozens of artists paint, sculpt and perform throughout…
Denver band One Flew West has been around for several years now, and it's always awesome to see them live in concert. They were at the Bluebird Theater for the release of their new EP Trial and Error last week and the place was packed. Fellow Coloradans Silver & Gold and Compass & Cavern opened the night. The guys played a wide variety of tunes - including songs from the new EP (of course), older faves like "Kind of Love" and "Had It All," as well as a new one that lead singer Linden Jackson had written only a few days before. Videos are something this band is really good at - so be sure to check out their YouTube Channel. Especially since new videos of songs from the show are due out very soon. It's been amazing to watch One Flew West grow as a band. I am lucky to have photographed them several times before, but this was their first headlining show at the iconic east Colfax venue. Based on how much ass was kicked, I know there will be many more.

I definitely believe in paying anyone for work done, especially bands - but I loved that Denver band Decatur recently held a free show for fans when original member Sam Oatts (currently the lead trumpet on the Broadway tour of “American in Paris”) was in town. I had never seen these guys before and I enjoyed how many different styles of music they pull together while putting on a fun concert. I was able to sit down and chat with band member Quinn Cox and he told me their name isn't actually due to the city of Decatur, as one might think - it's from a nickname/mispronunciation of lead singer Sean DeCrescenzo's name. I'm someone who gets both their real and blog name slaughtered all the time - I feel the pain. Decatur has been gaining attention lately, including a session with Open Air and a slot on Spotify's Hot New Songs 2018 playlist. Be sure to check out the single "Shake" as well as their self-titled EP. Also, next time Decatur plays in Denver, count us in!

I have seen Ian Mahan perform live a few times but hadn't had a chance to photograph him until his show last week at Lost Lake Lounge. Ian recently released a new single, "Breakaway," but was also pretty prolific in 2017 with two EPs. He writes some great songs, but is also fun to see live. It's usually a stripped down concert, which IMO shows off his songs best. Although he's the kind of songwriter that it would be cool to see a full orchestra behind him too. (Maybe later in 2018???) Either way, keep an eye on Ian Mahan and get out to see him when you can.
