40 Years of The Damned – Concert Photos from Denver’s Summit

Classic UK punk band The Damned is celebrating their 40th anniversary this year and stopped by Denver earlier this year to include us in the fun. Significantly younger but definitely kick-ass band Bleached joined the party.

Damned lead singer Dave Vanian had dislocated his shoulder earlier in the tour, but no one would have known had he not been wearing a sling. His partner in crime Captain Sensible was as joyous as ever, somewhat of an oxymoron for a punk band – but that just adds to The Damned’s legend.

These guys have refused to be defined by pretty much anything for four decades, and it shows. Every time I have seen them, it’s raucous and raw. Right now they are back to the studio and will pick back up on tour next year.

Can’t wait!

Peelander-Z in Concert is Like Taking Crazy Pills

In a good way, of course.

Have you heard of these guys? Peelander-Z is a Japanese pop-punk band and each member goes by the color they wear at the show. Yellow is the ringleader and since they hail from “Planet Peelander,” I can’t exactly tell you his age. Let’s just say I hope I am as active and fun-loving as that dude when I’m as old as him.

Pink plays bass and leads the crowd in chanting song names from cards she waves in the air. (Mad Tiger! Mad Tiger!) Green and Purple are relatively recent additions, after Blue and Red left the group a few years ago.

But never you mind, whatever the colors, Peelander-Z is a blast live. Perhaps not the best singers you’ll hear, but certainly one of the most fun bands you will experience – ever. I say that with reasonable certainty since their last visit was my third time seeing them live and they only get better.

Perhaps it’s the wisdom they have gained over the years.

Goodbye Sweet Poe

This is one of those posts I feel I should write, but I don’t have much to say.

We’re heartbroken.

When Poe came to us, we knew that Bernese Mountain Dogs had an extremely short lifespan, but didn’t quite realize how fast time would fly. Only eight and a half years with the sweetest dog ever.

Yes, he could be seriously whiney. And anxious. And over the top obsessed with Bryan (who isn’t?)… but even behind all that scaredy cat dog was the most sensitive and kind heart. Eyes you could melt in. An 85 pound lap dog.

In the end, his back-end was paralysed and watching him walk would be funny if you weren’t petrified he could truly hurt himself. There were lumps of cancer all over, and just no way to help him.

This week we said goodbye to Poe, right before the Fourth of July so he wouldn’t stress over all those loud booms that sound like thunder. Because every single day was incrementally worse and to wait any longer was cruel.

We’ve been trading stories with friends who knew Poe, knew what a sloppy goofball he was, either online or IRL, because the loss hurts either way. For years, when I have said “my boys” I meant three of them. Pets are part of the family, and this big guy will be missed forever.

Goodbye, sweet Poe.

Universal Studios Orlando Florida Tips: It’s Not Just Harry Potter!

Note: Universal Studios Orlando provided two of our six tickets to the park. However, all words and images are mine.

Yes, I will admit it. Our original goal in visiting Universal Studios was 100% Harry Potter. We went with our Denver “framily” and all six of us are serious fans, including the newly-indoctrinated nine year old. With the lead up to the first book’s 20th anniversary, our Potterfever was at all all time high when we visited Florida for Spring Break this year.

What we realized: There is so much more to Universal Studios than Harry Potter. Here are some advice from all of us to make your trip more fun.

The Unlikely Candidates in Fort Collins

Denver likes to adopt bands. Not that we really need to, since we have a robust music scene right here in the Mile High City – but after bands start coming back over and over, we tend to think they are ours too.

This is true for The Unlikely Candidates, technically from Texas, but who have made Colorado somewhat of a second home. When a band does this, they don’t just play Denver – they play all the surrounding cities like Colorado Springs, Boulder and my favorite-city-for-Colorado-music-besides-Denver, Fort Collins.

I’ve mentioned before how we met these guys at Firefly several years ago, and have kept up with them ever since. With good reason, because they put on an incredible live show. Generally loud, rambunctious and sweaty – just like rock and roll concerts should be. They only have a few tour dates listed for this summer right now, but I am sure that will change soon – TUC loves the road.

See you again soon, guys!
