Foster The People Photos From Fillmore Denver

I have a weird obsession with tracking how many times I have listened to songs and I can tell you that Foster The People’s “Houdini” is way, way up there for me. Embarrassingly so. The whole Torches album just makes me happy and I love the latest Sacred Hearts Club too (it’s been in my sidebar recommendations since release). So, of course, I was thrilled to photograph Mark Foster and his crew for the second time when they hit The Fillmore Denver recently.

I will admit that this show was perhaps not as electric as their Red Rocks appearance, but that venue is usually hard to top. Mark Foster’s voice still sounds better live than recorded and he still dances in that Mark Foster way. Come back soon, guys!

Concert Lighting Advice For Bands from a Photographer

I have been a concert photographer around Denver for about eight years and it’s been an amazing ride. I love photographing every kind of band in every kind of venue – and I have even started traveling to do it. Here in Denver, we have venues of every size, which makes it great for local and touring bands to move up and down that ladder as they play. Thus, I have shot the smallest rooms in the complete dark up to our biggest, brightest locations.

Concert Lighting Tips from a Photographer

One thing that bands often ask about is concert lighting – and tips on how to do it from a photographer’s perspective. The easy answer you will hear from all of us is “NO RED LIGHTS!” – but why? There is actually a reason based on color theory, if you can believe it.

And while I know that bands do not always have control over what the venue does with lights – many of the people behind that board are more than happy to do what they can to accommodate your requests … you simply need to know what to ask for. Continue reading…

Hotel Riu Palace Peninsula Review: Luxury and Ease in Cancun

Note: Riu Hotels provided my stay, however all words and photos are mine.

Hotel Riu Palace Peninsula - Cancun Resort Travel

I was lucky enough to add a day at the beginning and end of my recent trip to Tulum to visit Cancun for the first time – and two Riu resorts: The Riu Palace Peninsula and the Riu Palace Las Americas, which I will cover in another post.

I know – it’s crazy that we often visit Mexico and I have never been to this hub, right? What I discovered is how EASY it is from Denver. I got early morning direct flights to Cancun, a quick shuttle ride and I was on the beach by mid-afternoon.

I’ll be honest, Cancun has always intimidated me because of its “party” reputation. We, of course, like to have fun and go out a lot … but we aren’t interested in an insanely wild location (usually, ha). Maybe during Spring Break Cancun is a bit different, but I found the Riu hotels we visited to be exactly what I was looking for. Luxury for adults-only, on the beach, with good food and amenities – plus a nice, friendly atmosphere.

The Lumineers at Fiddler’s Green in Denver

A Denver band that I am shocked I had not seen live until recently is The Lumineers. They moved here from New York in 2010 and played the Meadowlark’s open mic night regularly, so I definitely missed out. It took two nights of sold out shows at Fiddler’s Green for me to finally see The Lumineers and they were worth the wait.

Right now, they have quite a few shows to finish out the year … and I’m putting in a request for more Colorado dates in 2018?

My Body Sings Electric + Chemistry Club at Levitt Pavilion

Remember summer? And how the new Levitt Pavilion had a bunch of local Denver backs to kick off their first season? Yeah, totally!

That’s just me, catching up on photos right on time for a band’s next show. My Body Sings Electric in particular will be celebrating their 10th anniversary in December with three shows: Fort Collins, Colorado Springs and Denver. Ten years! That’s seriously amazing – congrats, guys!

They were joined by Chemistry Club for a co-headlining spot at Levitt in August, which was one of my favorite shows at the venue so far.
