Interview With Foals’ Walter Gervers

You know that song “Mountain At My Gates,” right? Even if you think you don’t, you do. Foals’ new album What Went Down has lots of great songs, but that one in particular is finally getting this decade-old English band some radio airplay. I was lucky enough to get on the phone with Foals bass player Walter Gervers this week before their upcoming concert at the Ogden Theatre.

Interview with Walter Gervers from the band Foals

I have heard Foals described in many ways… what style of music do you call it?
That is the hardest question we get asked, because we scavenge so many things from different styles. We’re definitely a rock band. But we can have heavy punk, and do a ballad, and we are all influenced by dance music too. I guess you could say we are a musical hamper (laughs). Continue reading…

Riu Palace Riviera Maya: Chandeliers By The Beach

Note: A portion of our trip was provided by Riu Hotels. However, all words and photos are mine.

It’s been ten years since we visited the Riviera Maya area of Mexico. And the last time we were there, I broke my ankle! Lucky for me, this trip – and our time at Riu Palace Riviera Maya – were totally incident-free. In fact, everything was exactly what you want from a beach vacation. Well, the weather was maybe a touch cool (75 F) for Mexico, but I will let Riu off the hook for that.

As in 2006, our best friends Danielle, Jeff and their son joined us. We consider each other “framily” in that we spend holidays and vacations together. This time was extra, extra special because we watched the Denver Broncos win the Super Bowl while drinking cervezas on the beach. WOOT! Continue reading…

Tyto Alba Interview and Video Release

Recently I got on the phone to chat with Tyto Alba, a Denver indie rock band who debuted their new video single at Syntax Physic Opera over the weekend. Melanie, Matt, Danny and Jeremy were super fun to talk with and I love the new song.

Tyto Alba Interview:

What does the name “Tyto Alba” mean?

It’s actually the scientific name for barn owls, but we just loved the way it sounded. Continue reading…

I have been building this Christmas playlist for years now. It’s a combination of traditional, alternative, indie, R&B, pop, and rock holiday music. While I do think the Christmas season starts too early, I will admit I listen to these songs non-stop from Thanksgiving all the way through New Year’s Eve. Hope you enjoy!

And please, suggest any songs you love that I am missing!

#ROAR14 In Costa Rica

Note: Several parts of my Roar Retreat conference have been sponsored, or arranged by the conference’s organizers. All words are mine.

I have wanted to visit Costa Rica forever. My best friend Danielle has been many times; her stories and photos just BLOW MY MIND. When friend, client and colleague Andrea Fellman moved there about a year ago, I knew at some point I would figure out a way to visit her. Luckily she and Nadia Carriere made it simple for me when they created Roar Retreat.

I was thrilled to do the design and web work for the project, and of course, attend. The time has flown since we started working on all this nearly a year ago –  I leave for Costa Rica tomorrow. Continue reading…
