Last week, we celebrated our 20th wedding anniversary. Many people say this, but it feels like just yesterday *and* forever ago - all at the same time. We married here in Denver, a little while after we moved and it's fun to think about how young and optimistic we were then. We may be more cynical and jaded now, but in many ways, we still work on our marriage just as hard as day one. Some things get easier over the years, some harder. For example - we literally have talked about everything. What is there left to say after all this time? Well, for one, we recently chatted about how we make our marriage work so I could write one of these condescending posts about it. Look... We know every marriage is different. We've seen some couples split for reasons I could not explain, and people stay together for no good one. No judgements here, just some suggestions from two goofballs who still lean on each other as heavily now as they did two decades ago.
You know that song "Mountain At My Gates," right? Even if you think you don't, you do. Foals' new album What Went Down has lots of great songs, but that one in particular is finally getting this decade-old English band some radio airplay. I was lucky enough to get on the phone with Foals bass player Walter Gervers this week before their upcoming concert at the Ogden Theatre.
Interview with Walter Gervers from the band FoalsI have heard Foals described in many ways… what style of music do you call it? That is the hardest question we get asked, because we scavenge so many things from different styles. We're definitely a rock band. But we can have heavy punk, and do a ballad, and we are all influenced by dance music too. I guess you could say we are a musical hamper (laughs).
Note: A portion of our trip was provided by Riu Hotels. However, all words and photos are mine. It's been ten years since we visited the Riviera Maya area of Mexico. And the last time we were there, I broke my ankle! Lucky for me, this trip - and our time at Riu Palace Riviera Maya - were totally incident-free. In fact, everything was exactly what you want from a beach vacation. Well, the weather was maybe a touch cool (75 F) for Mexico, but I will let Riu off the hook for that. As in 2006, our best friends Danielle, Jeff and their son joined us. We consider each other "framily" in that we spend holidays and vacations together. This time was extra, extra special because we watched the Denver Broncos win the Super Bowl while drinking cervezas on the beach. WOOT!
Recently I got on the phone to chat with Tyto Alba, a Denver indie rock band who debuted their new video single at Syntax Physic Opera over the weekend. Melanie, Matt, Danny and Jeremy were super fun to talk with and I love the new song.
Tyto Alba Interview:
What does the name "Tyto Alba" mean? It's actually the scientific name for barn owls, but we just loved the way it sounded.
I have been building this Christmas playlist for years now. It's a combination of traditional, alternative, indie, R&B, pop, and rock holiday music. While I do think the Christmas season starts too early, I will admit I listen to these songs non-stop from Thanksgiving all the way through New Year's Eve. Hope you enjoy! And please, suggest any songs you love that I am missing!
