Blows Me Away

The wife of the colleague I met with in San Francisco accompanied him on the trip. Both of them are friends as well as colleagues. She was also a professor at his university, before a degenerative skin disease started taking her life away. I can’t recall what the disease is called, but it acts like diabetes in that the circulation halts and then causes infections. To date, she has had to have both legs amputated at the knees and has one prothesis while waiting for the other. She joined us for dinner on Wednesday, in her wheelchair, being as energetic as a Spring day. She even had a saucy cap and shimmering body glitter on. Sure, she looked fairly pale and very frail – but her spirit was alive and kicking. I admire her so much for her strength to keep fighting, and most of all for her strength to keep optimistic. An amazing lady.
