Tuesday Night Nerd Club

Have I mentioned that Bryan gets Tuesday nights to do his own thing and I get Thursdays? And that I generally go out and explore the world and he generally stays at the office and plays on the computer?

OK, I really shouldn’t make fun, because he mostly works on 3D animations and illustrations, which make him happy and excited and content all at the same time – which in turn makes me happy and excited and content all at the same time.

And he used to laugh my “mommy boards” until he started doing 3D and reading “3D boards.” Now, they throw up challenges at large that engross him on Tuesdays, and he really comes up with the coolest shit, man.

This month’s challenge? To create a Punk Rock Robot. I love it already and he is only half done.

So, what do you do in your nerd off time? If you get any that is? (And if you don’t, start negotiating! I highly recommend it!)

P.S. 30 Days of Thanks
I love that we have this agreement to allow each other free time to do our own thing. Even though I had to push Bryan into it kicking and screaming. (What can I say? He loves hanging out with us!) But it really helps us breathe. Also, Declan loves the one-on-one time he gets with the at-home parent, too!

Thursday is my night off too.

I usually go over to my GF’s house and hang out and drink beer and eat popcorn while watching a movie. Or shopping. Or the library. Just gotta get out of the house.

OMG. How is it you live so far from us? Nathan gets Wednesdays and I take Thursdays. He plays geek games with his friends, The Geek Squad, I go to bars with my cool friends. He’s much better at keeping to the schedule than me, but I’m working on that.

that one-on-one time is so important- for everyone! good for you guys for making that happen.

seeing as i am single girl with two cats, i can pick and choose from my alone time…but i tend to read or do something crafty.

We do not have regular nights off, but we do allow each other some time alone. I tend to take mine in daily doses of running while W chooses to go have breakfast by himself and read the newspaper on a Sunday morning or Sunday afternoon. I think the key is to recognize when the other person needs that time out – preferably before it becomes critical.

My husband goes on an annual “fishing” trip. He goes to Europe for a week and attends at least one classical music concert everyday. It’s his time to indulge in his passion. I spend the time remembering how much fun it is to live alone. 🙂

    Love the Robot!

I don’t know what I would do without my mommy boards!

    The robot is awesome!

I’m thinking the Thursday Night girls need to start having conference calls.

I head to the nearest Barnes & Noble, find a quiet corner and hide, usually with computer and iPod in tow.

It is truly when I can turn everything ‘off’ in my mind and just relax.

Too bad it doesn’t happen on a very consistent basis.

    Have a great day.

    My free time? You’re funny.

Well… I run. In two weeks I’ll start training for my next marathon. When I’m training – I do my long runs on Saturday morning – so that’s my time.

My husband has no problem finding ways to amuse himself…

Our agreement is more on when we DO see each other. We both work long hours and he has a number of hobbies and belongs to a lodge. I hang with friends, see movies, etc. Our agreement is weekends are OURS. We plan the must do’s and the wanna do’s and then what we usually end up doing is the must must do’s and let the rest go so we can just do a little hanging out together.

I am lucky to get Tuesday and Friday nights “off”. I use this time to rehearse with my band. I also feel immensely guilty about it since my wife stays at home with our 3 kids and doesn’t take any time off at all. She claims this is how she wants it, but that does nothing to dissuade my guilt glands from working overtime. I still go to rehearsals, however, so I guess I’m not THAT guilty about it 😉

As a single mom, I crave that “time off.” My sister sometimes offers to take the girl, though, so I go to a movie…or just read a book. Talk about geek time – I put my nose in a book!

I gotta get me some of this designated time off action! I occasionally make plans with my girlfriends to go out and play, but to KNOW “my day” is coming? That would provide light at the end of the tunnel each week.

No, I do not get any off-time, not anything scheduled like you have. Wednesday afternoons, my daughter almost always has a playdate with one of her Kindergarten friends— I take that time for my “me” time. I think, I would negotiate with my husband for some evening, though. Thanks for the inspiration.

Hi! Found your through NaBlogPoMo and am totally diggin’ your blog!

Anyhoo… Hubby and I have a similar agreement, except that we call his time “office hours”. He’s into 3D graphics and animation too and always has some sort of project going.

Anytime there was one iota of “free time”, he would sneak into the office and code, code, code (just like a crack addict with a brand new pipe).

Well, this meant there were other things around the house that never got DONE… such as putting away the grill, taking out the trash, the dishes, and umm, ME!

To remedy this, I “gave” him three nights a week when he gets to work uninterrupted, provide the other days are spend doing his fair share of household chores.

I, on the other hand, leave whenever I want… and it’s usually to drink with my mommy friends 🙂

Anymore, blogging and visiting blogs is such a treat for me.

And let me just take this opportunity to say thanks for keeping me in your radar while I’ve been away! 🙂

That illustration is just awesome! We don’t have scheduled nerd nights. But when I get then I am usually a) blogging, b) playing around with html and trying to figure out what the hell a girl’s got to do to make a pretty page, or c) perusing Barnes & Noble. Sometimes I do non-nerd things that don’t involve words. Sometimes I shop. For yarn and a new project.

I admire that you both are committed to the time. My husband’s job doesn’t allow for regular “nerd” nights. He often works until 9-10pm. I’ve got book group once a month and, well, blogging!!

So you, darling, are my respite. Feel honored, or very sad for me.

  23. The Fat Housewife

I wish I had an actual life in my free time. Guess I should get out more.

    Very cool!

Mostly I like to play World of Warcraft, but I’ve been so busy I’ve not had time lately!

Oh.. or rubber stamping. Or cross-stitching. Or crocheting. Or knitting. Or watching movies. Or reading. Or playing with my dogs. Or gardening in the summer. Or blogging and reading blogs (of course).

Have I mentioned I have too many interests? 😉

That’s a great concept – both the robot and the schedule.

Every night I’m off duty once dinner is done. The Husband does all the bath time and bed time rituals whilst I blog. Or veg. Or both. And he gets quality time with his sons and he regards the time as quality time whereas I just think of it as one more damn thing to do before I get to reclaim my fleeting grasp on sanity.

Occasionally I do leave the house after dinner, but seeing as all the stores shut down at 5 PM (save for my beloved thrift store) my options would be v. dull.
