Maui Day 5 (Part 1, Nature Walk)

Usually when we go on vacation, I am allowed part of a day to just go off by myself, just me and my camera. This time, it fell on Christmas Eve. Later in the evening we attended a huge luau, which I will cover this weekend, but I ended up with so many fun photos from my nature walk, I wanted to do a separate post about them.

Anyone have any clue what the maroon and white flower is? It was my star of the day.

Oh and also, a friend from work whose family is from Hawaii told me a story about #10:

It is a naupaka plant. Legend has it that way back when there were two lovers and Pele (Hawaiian goddess of lava) fell in love with the man. When she found he didn’t love her back she chased the two lovers apart, one to the mountains and the other to the sea. To keep Pele from killing the two lovers her sisters turned them both into naupaka. The naupaka plant by the sea has petals only on the bottom half of the flower and the naupaka plant in the mountains only has petals on the top half. So if you put the two flowers together you are reuniting the divided lovers. At least that’s the version I’ve heard. There are a number of versions of the story. Here is a different one: http://www.aloha-hawaii.com/hawaii/naupaka/

Heather, I probably should put that in my About page, huh.

But I shoot with both a Canon Digital Rebel XT and a Canon EOS 40D.

I mostly shoot my flower photos with my macro lens – the Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro. But I think a few of these might have also been shot with my new lens, the Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM. I also do most of my portraits with my Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM because it gives such great depth of field.

And everyone, thanks all for your lovely compliments!

Now, if I could only figure out what to DO with all these photos!

Your pictures are stunning. You have such a wonderful eye. Thank you for listing what lenses you use, I have been trying to decide on a good macro lens.

  37. Aimee Greeblemonkey

Autumn, I am really happy with mine, and in the grand scheme of things, it wasn’t that expensive.

  38. Bunny

These are amazing! What kind of lens were you using. Did you click into manual focus for some of these? I’m just in awe!
