A Good Night Always Ends In Confetti

Dude, I love concerts. Especially concerts where both the opening band and the main act are exceptional.

Last night Danielle and I saw Sara Bareilles and James Blunt play the Ogden, it was freaking PACKED, and they were AWESOME.

Sara has the voice of an angel. Seriously. She sang almost every song I wanted to hear (except “Fairytale”), but most importantly she sang “Love On The Rocks,” one of the best pop songs ever written. She also explained the story behind her hit, “Love Song.” If you haven’t heard it – apparently there was pressure from the record company to “fill out” the album and she kept coming in with song after song and they didn’t like them, and she started doubting herself as a songwriter, and she went back in the studio and tried to write a really really honest song and Love Song is what came out. Relisten to the lyrics from that perspective!

I was able to catch “Gravity” on my iPhone – and considering it was a cell phone recording to my work voicemail from the back of the venue (it took us forever to park so we barely made it in time), it actually sounds fairly good if you turn up the speakers. She literally gave me chills when she sang this song.

And then Mr. Blunt came out. Looking fine. Danielle and I had seen him a few years ago, opening for Jason Mraz. It was just him and a guitar player then and we were impressed. Him and a full band is more impressive. I tell you, he is one of those singers that sound better live, that pull you into the song with the emotion of his voice.

And he ended the show with confetti. What’s more fun than that?

P.S. We looked up his history on Wikipedia as the car warmed up on the way home. I knew he had been in the army and in Kosovo, but seriously: read about his military career here. The guy is badass. Anyone who has been through that has earned the right to make sappy love songs.

the first time i heard “love song” was at one of her early shows before she’d even finished recording her album with epic and she told us about the story behind the lyrics. i’ve never thought of that song any other way but when i see people singing along to it at shows i realize not everyone knows the origin. changes it, doesn’t it? but not in a bad way. it’s a great song and fabulous album.

    she’s just fantastic!

I know, it actually makes it more fun, I think. Kind of like Harder To Breathe by Maroon 5 which I believe has similar origins.

I love James Blunt…but cant say that I know Sara. Will have to check her out.

I love going to concerts as well…just usually don’t as I can’t afford them. Years ago I worked for the Indiana State Fair and was able to sneak in most nights to those concerts which was awesome.

I have been to quite a few but here are my top 5 that I have been to:

    1. Barry Manilow
    2. Garth Brooks
    3. Sarah Mclachlan
    4. Chicago/Beach Boys (Together)
    5. Neal Diamond

Now…I love all kinds of music…but my latest love is “Wilco” – if you haven’t heard them…check it out!

Christina, I would KILL to see STYX in concert! That would so ROCK!!

  5. Sarah O.

I’ve become so uncool, I’d never even heard of Sara Bareilles. Thanks for the introduction – she’s now one of my new faves.

And also, I had seen him in an interview years ago talking about it – and basically he did it to get money for university and then Kosovo happened.

OMG, how jealous am I? I bet that was an awesome show.

    how fun!!!

  9. Autumn

I.Am.So.Jealous! I love Sara Bareilles! I like James Blunt too, but I have been listening to Sara a lot lately. I’m glad you had a good time.

Considering that I had never heard “love song” or even heard of this artist before last week when another blogger posted her video, well this is interesting! Now you post about her, and the morning radio show here in San Diego will have her in studio tomorrow. Thanks for the behind the scenes story on that song (which I love). You are so much more hip than me – going to see up to the minute artists while I am all excited about seeing Styx on Sat night!! Oof, I feel OLD!

Christina… You should have found me a while ago! 😉

Here is my previous post about her:

    Speaking In Thirds

  12. Jennifer, Le Binky Bitch

You always get to do the coolest things!

I’m jealous, in case you couldn’t tell.

  13. Aimee Greeblemonkey

“Sara Country Omlette” – that is SO FREAKING AWESOME.

  14. Aimee Greeblemonkey

Ha, I just noticed I had “Love Song” spelled as “Long Song” in the post.

    Nice!

  15. Binkytown

If you hadn’t linked to Wikipedia I would NOT have believed you that he was a military dude! News to me! Wow!

  16. Aimee Greeblemonkey

Binky, listen to his song, No Bravery. It’s really moving.

I think my head would explode to hear Sara. My daughter has also changed her name to “Sara”. She’s actually changed it to Sara Country Omlette.

  18. Karen

Did you know that James Blunt advertised his sister as a ‘damsel in distress’ on eBay as she needed to get to a wedding. The man who ‘won’ her ended up taking her in his helicopter. He’s now James’ brother-in-law!

  19. Mrs. Chicken

You are much cooler than me. I can’t stay up past nine and loud noises make me cranky. 🙂

  20. Renaissance Woman

I loves James Blunt as well. The last concert that ended in confetti on my head…the Cheetah Girls. That is living on the wild side. 🙂

  21. Noble Savage

I’m not a James Blunt fan but will check out this Sarah chick. Blunt is regarded as a bit of a (another word ending in -unt) here in the UK so he doesn’t have the best rep. C’est la vie.

  22. carrie

Ooooh, I love a good concert.

Keep your fingers crossed for me that I get tix to see Dave Matthews AND The Dali Lama . . . Concert for Compassion. I’m so psyched.

  23. Aimee Greeblemonkey

    Carrie – good luck!!!

Karen, I do remember something about the helicopter thing!

Savage, for what kinds of stuff? Other than the helicopter thing, heh. Not that I really care. I just like his music.

  24. Megan

Whatever he is, I like his music!

  25. mommypie

Can I just say how jealous I am? I lived in Denver for 13 years, but moved back to my hometown here in the boonies in Montana in ’05. Don’t get me wrong, I love it, but what I wouldn’t give for a good concert back in the Mile High again… *sigh*

  26. asoom

Thanks for the concert review. I’m going to it on Friday and I’m sooooo excited. Do you remember what else james blunt played besides the obvious (goodbye my lover and you’re beautiful)?
