How To Make Birdwine – by Declan
Sometimes I am utterly amazed at the cool things they do at Declan’s school. In Kindergarten, they learned about poetry and Declan spent weeks filling up a notebook with poems about mama, dada and laundry lint.
Now in 1st grade? The latest lesson is in “how-to” books. As in, how to make how-to books.
And just what does my child decide to teach the rest of the class?

oh my god – love it!!! – m
I.I. made one for Kindergarten:
“How to Cath (catch) a Turkey”
1. Get a net.
2. Get some bird seed.
3. Wait for a turkey to walk by.
Classic.
Wow. I want some birdwine!
I’ve always thought Declan is so cute, but this is over-the-top. Either clone him or make a baby for me. Send ASAP!
People used to ask me how I could intuit so much about my students’ home lives. They bring it with them, I think: clearly, you feed birds, love the outdoors, and enjoy a nice Syrah. Now, if he had written “How to cook up birdmeth,” that would convey something different…
ha ha, sarah that is classic!!!!!!
I like his simplicity.
Hilarious! should we let Napa have the recipe?
And what happy birds they will be!
I am so glad that Birdwine is wine for birds, not wine made of birds, as I had feared.
Declan is a very special child in so many ways, but his imagination and point of view are truly a wonder!
So when do we get to purchase a copy?
(I assume he’ll want to self-publish)
he is so awesome!
