Recycle Crayons Into Fun Shapes

Yes! Another thing I found on Pinterest. My favorite place ever to store ideas.

This time, when I told my son what we were going to do, I think his head exploded with excitement. “YOU WANT TO TAKE MY OLD, BROKEN CRAYONS AND MAKE NEW ONES???”

Yes.

“CAN WE USE THE BRAIN MOLDS THAT WE MAKE ICE OUT OF?”

Yes.

Game over. Officially coolest mom he has ever had. Heh.

STEP ONE:
Have old and broken crayons. {I think you all have this covered.} Peel them. Cut them. Break them. And/or chop them up. In our case, I volunteered a old chopper thing to make me even cooler in my son’s eyes, but I wouldn’t necessarily recommend this, because chopper thing will pretty much only be chopping crayons from now on.

STEP TWO:

Organize your colors. This was the most time-consuming part for my kid, who is probably OCD, but I have OCD as well, so this was really fun, and hello!!! THE COLOR YOU END UP WITH IS THE WHOLE POINT, RIGHT?

STEP THREE:
Fill your silicon mold. I have seen people using metal tins, but is that a “fun shape”? NO. This post is about fun shapes, and we wanted BRAIN CRAYONS. So nothing less than the BRAIN SILICON MOLD would do.

STEP FOUR:
100_0765Bake in the oven at 225 degrees for about 15 minutes (put the silicon mold on a cookie sheet for stability). Start checking after about 10. You want the crayons to be melted and runny, but not so runny that they actually combine into one new color. Pull the mold out of the oven and allow to cool overnight. Seriously. If you take them out earlier, you will have a crayon that works just fine but looks nothing like a brain. Trust me on this as you may notice there are only 3 crayons in the photo.

Also, I realize this last step probably should have been like 3 separate steps but we all know I am not a craft blogger, so I forgot to photograph some things, and also LIKE I REALLY WANT YOU TO SEE MY GRIMY OVEN GUTS??? Friends don’t let friends see gross gunk.

ONE LAST WORD OF WARNING:
Do not start ANY of this on your child’s bedroom floor, especially if they have a carpet, unless you are prepared for the consequences.

HECK YEAH Pinterest rules! These brains are so awesome.

We (I…my son was 4) made some heart-shaped crayons for Valentine’s day. I put them in favor bags with a tag that read “YOU COLOR MY WORLD!” Oh, the cheese! They came out sweeeet, though (http://goodknits.com/blog/2010/02/08/you-color-my-world/). I bought some skull silicone molds at the dollar store for Halloween crayons! I also sort of bought 5 boxes of crayons just for this, the other day. Office Depot had a back to school sale and they were a quarter each!

Coolest crayons ever! I have never messed with Pinterest…don’t get it, but if these are the sorts of things you find there, I may give it a try.
