Higher Ground Music Festival

Higher Ground Music Festival 2014

Note: Colorado Music Buzz provided tickets to this event; all words and photos are mine.

Did you know there is amazing graffiti in the alley behind Casselman’s? I didn’t because I am usually out way late at night and don’t have occasion to hang out back there. However, Higher Ground Music Festival is now cleverly set up on 27th between Walnut and Larimer in LoDo Denver, including the connecting alley. It was a great location for a rock music festival, because you could quickly and easily walk back and forth between the stages – with drink in hand.

The line-up this year was also stellar and I had a blast photographing as many a I could, even though it was one of our hottest summer days, as you will see below. Another stroke of genius was the placement of baby pools all over, which allowed us to literally get our feet wet… and once you got past the gross factor of all those, well, wet feet – it really made a difference in my chances of passing out from the heat.

I would say the only thing I did not care for at Higher Ground was the logo and branding, which seems like a a bunch of Grateful Dead cover bands in the woods rather than a great variety of indie music in the city. Well, to be fair – Higher Ground started out up in the mountains but came down the hill when they realized our heart is here. And trust me, I have given Colorado Music Buzz a rash of teasing about the logo. Hopefully the branding will match the high caliber of the festival overall when it returns to Denver next summer.

So. Below are photos of all the bands I was able to get to in between drinks (with links to their sites). The most notably missing is the headliner Barcelona, who I *was* able to meet in person, and they were incredibly nice. I have photographed them several times before and hope to do so again when they play Denver in November.

(Yeah, guys, that was a hint.)

Please note the Go Pro in several of these photos. If you know this person, please let me know so I can kick his ass.

Otherwise, apologies again to Barcelona for not having the stamina to make it all the way through. But as you can see, HGMF was filled with great bands, and these were only the bands I was able to see. I look forward to next year – more graffiti, more friends, and more kick ass music!

Love the photo of Izcalli’s lead singer, Miguel and agreed, put this on your 2015 festival list. I ran into the Go Pro guy at our stage in Chico, front and center for Shatterproof, I gave him a wedgie.

Ugh – we need to start talking to security about not allowing anything 3 feet above the floor of the stage. There was someone at In The Whale at UMS who had his GoPro stick *literally* in Nate’s face, within inches.

On a nicer note – thanks again to SpokesBuzz for all you do for Colorado music! Love you guys!

)perfect grammar doesn’t exactly translate to brilliance and good work ethics…but one cannot help but feel sad and wonder at the implication… just how much has our education system deteriorated?

I have a newsletter just for new releases. I don't mind receiving newsletter but I don't read all of them. I check them out, more from curiosity. maybe it's just me but if I like an author, I'll figure out when they have a book out. I don't need a newsletter. :)But I"m def. not the expert on them. They must work for some authors.
