Duran Duran, Chic and Clean Bandit at Red Rocks

Duran Duran. One of my all-time favorite bands… and this was the second time I got to photograph them. Except this would be the first time they played the legendary Red Rocks Amphitheater. As a bonus, Nile Rodgers, who has produced basically every band in the world (OK, an exaggeration, but not by much) opened with his band Chic. I was also introduced to Clean Bandit that night, except for when they started playing, I realized I knew their songs if not their name.

So, yes. Another great night up on the rocks. I was particularly touched as Nile Rodgers talked about his struggle with cancer – how they told him he only had a few years to live, so he decided to do what any musician would want to do, make as much music as possible while he still could. The first song he co-wrote after that was Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky” and Nile says he is incredibly lucky because he is now cancer-free.

What can you say about Duran Duran? These boys covered my walls when I was a teenager but they still continue to make great music and put on fantastic concerts. In fact, the new album is the highest charting in over 22 years. Simon’s voice is still magnetic and seductive. John’s bass is still wicked. Nick is the mystery man behind all those well-known keyboard melodies. AND! I actually got some fun shots of Roger inside his fortress of drums.

So, yes.

Duran Duran kicks ass. Always.
