iZCALLi is one of my favorite bands in Denver. I can’t even recall how many times I have seen them, but unfortunately – for whatever reason – I rarely get to photograph them. I made a point of being there when they opened for Celso Piña at Levitt Denver this summer.
As usual, they got the crowd moving with their mix of Latin-flavored rock. The band’s primary members are Miguel Aviña (vocals and guitar), Brenda Aviña (bass), and Luiggy Ramirez (drums) with guests Wes Watkins (horn), Josh Lee (violin), and David Maynez (sax) for live shows. This makes iZCALLi one of Denver’s most diverse groups in, let’s face it, a town not known for its diversity. But it’s also a family affair. Miguel and Brenda are siblings – and their closeness comes out on stage. Although frankly, this group has been playing together so long, there is a tight-knit feel among all members. Take all that musical talent and add genuinely nice people – and you have a great night out.
