I have seen Andrew McMahon several times before (photographed in 2015 and 2016), but never as the headliner, and never with as big of a stage production as he brought to The Fillmore Auditorium in Denver. It was clear that Andrew was dreaming of summer (don’t we all) and delivered the poolside vibes from his latest album, Upside Down Flowers.
The frontman from Something Corporate and Jack’s Mannequin has legions of fans for his solo work, and clearly a ton from Denver too. I usually head to the back of the venue after photographing, and from that vantage point, the enormous blue cloth I had seen in the pit made much more sense. The crew unfurled it into the crowd, who then created a huge human wave with that blue cloth that mimicked an ocean in landlocked Denver.
The love is well-earned. Andrew McMahon writes catchy songs from the heart and performs with an intensity rarely seen by someone who by and large in on the piano all night. Openers Flor and Grizfolk were a perfect accompaniment for the mood.
