I have been very lucky over the past few years, to be able to photograph some of my very favorite bands from growing up. Echo. Simple Minds. Depeche Mode. Bands that I still listen to every day. And my bucket list got two bands shorter recently when James and The Psychedelic Furs co-headlined an incredible concert at Denver’s Ogden Theatre. I have loved both bands since high school and neither disappointed with their live show in 2019. (In fact, I bought t-shirts from both bands.)
I had never seen James live and but noticed on Twitter that lead singer Tim Booth likes to change the setlist all the time. And why not?! They have 15 albums to choose from, including 2018’s Living in Extraordinary Times. Tim also likes to dance his ass off, as you’ll see in the photos below.
James stayed true to Tim’s promise, and their setlist was varied. Conspicuously missing was their biggest hit, “Laid.” But personally, as much as I would have loved to hear that, or a few other songs near and dear to my heart, the emotional performance paid off – and really, sometimes it’s nice to dig deeper.
Psychedelic Furs have a huge catalog to choose from as well! And they threw them down one after the other as Richard Butler strutted around stand in a long black trench coat and huge sunglasses. The whole band was clearly enjoying the show – and the packed crowd gave as good as they got. Some even got a handshake from Mr. Butler himself.
I walked out wanting more and thinking about how much decades of musical acumen really can make a show more magical. It definitely felt that way for me.
