Crowded House - Concert Denver 2023 - Paramount Theatre

Crowded House & Liam Finn at Paramount Denver

Most people who know me know that I have loved Crowded House since I was a teenager. I still remember being late to work at the Mall while listening to “Don’t Dream It’s Over” on my car radio and then waiting for them to tell me who sang that incredibly magical song. My infatuation for the band has carried through all seven studio albums, then Split Enz’s earlier releases, Neil’s solo albums, and family work with son Liam and wife Sharon. In fact, I have been able to photograph Neil Finn before up in Boulder (also, we traveled to see him in L.A.), but I’ve never photographed Crowded House as a unit before. While several band members are sadly not with us anymore, it was a joy to see Neil and Nick play with longtime collaborator Mitchell Froom, plus Liam and younger son Elroy.

My select few travels to see Crowded House are pitiful, though, compared to the hard-core Frenz, who follow the band worldwide. The love was strong here in Denver, and many people arrived early to catch opener Liam Finn doing a solo but multi-instrumental performance. Even though the Paramount is a seated and typically stay-seated venue, everyone was up by the end of the night, dancing and singing along with every word.

The band changed up the set list a bit every night (complete Denver list below), and we were gifted with “Recurring Dream” and “Love this Life” – both of which have not been played live in many years, along with two Split Enz covers, and David Bowie’s “Heroes.”

Neil’s voice sounded incredible, and the musicianship of all members was on full display. The camaraderie on stage was clear. I kept thinking – “How wonderful it must be for Neil to tour with his old friends and his sons.” The sense of humor was there too, as they all bantered and laughed – Liam even did somersaults down the aisle during “Show Me The Way.”

I gotta be honest and say I teared up more than once. I really hope it doesn’t take another 15 years for my favorite band to come back to Denver. But, as I said, we’re all willing to travel to see you guys too.
