The Wombats at Summit Denver
The Wombats have been around long enough now that their songs hit a little differently depending on when you first found them. For some people, it’s straight back to mid-2000s indie nights. For others, it’s more recent. Either way, they’ve managed to keep that core sound intact while letting it grow up alongside them. (P.S. I have been lucky enough to photograph them many times in the past!)
They came out of Liverpool with those sharp, slightly anxious, very catchy songs that didn’t take themselves too seriously but still stuck with you. That hasn’t really changed. The newer material fits right in with the older songs without feeling like a reset or a reach. It just sounds like a band that knows who they are at this point.
Live, that confidence shows. The set at Denver’s Summit Music Hall moved easily across their catalog, and nothing felt out of place. Some songs still carry that jittery, high-energy edge, others land a little heavier now, but it all works together. There’s a steadiness to the band that only comes from doing this for a long time, and it makes the whole show feel grounded in a good way.
And the crowd was locked in. Lots of singing along, but not in a forced way. More like people have been carrying these songs around with them for years and finally get to let them out a bit. That’s always the part I like most – watching which songs clearly mean something to people.
It never leaned on nostalgia, which I appreciated. This didn’t feel like a band revisiting their past. It felt like a band still actively adding to it. Just a really solid night with a band that has figured out how to stick around without getting stale.
The Wombats head back around Europe in 2026, so hopefully our friends there can see catch them next.
