Best Things To Do in St. Augustine, Florida
I went to college in St. Augustine in the early 90s, and it was the perfect place for me. Gorgeous location, great weather, laid-back atmosphere, but still tons of history (because it was founded in 1565!). Located one hour south of Jacksonville, one hour north of Daytona, and two hours northeast of Orlando, St. Augustine is a great stop on any tour of Florida – or given the extensive list of fun things to do below, it would be easy to spend a whole week there on vacation.
We did just that on a recent Spring Break trip, and it was wonderful to get back around to my old haunts. Many were just the same as I remembered, but the town has had a ton of growth. I used to live on 7th Street right by the beach and there is a hotel at the end of my block now! Ack! However, it actually made it easier to visit, because there are so many options.
I went to Flagler College (photo in the header), and I highly encourage a tour of the school because it was formerly a hotel and the building is gorgeous, especially the dining hall. I still can’t believe I got to go to school there. Other top tips include the Fort (Castillo de San Marcos), the Lighthouse (climb to the top), the beach (of course), the Alligator Farm (massively updated since my college days), the colonial St. George street area, and my favorite restaurant, Gypsy Cab.
Enjoy your visit – and let me know if I missed anything!
