Superchunk at the Gothic Theatre Denver
When Superchunk rolled into the Gothic Theatre in late 2025, it was the kind of night that reminded everyone why this band has remained a cornerstone of indie rock for more than three decades. The room filled early with the familiar mix of longtime fans and younger indie kids who clearly know their homework. Superchunk has always been one of those bands that bridges generations without trying too hard.
Frontman Mac McCaughan hit the stage with the same scrappy energy that defined the band’s early 90s records, and the crowd responded immediately. The band wasted no time tearing into a set packed with favorites alongside newer material that proves they are still writing sharp, punchy songs. Superchunk’s catalog runs deep, but the show never dragged – every track landed with that signature mix of fuzzed-out guitars, tight rhythms, and McCaughan’s unmistakable voice pushing things forward.
The Gothic was the perfect room for it. That venue has a way of making shows feel both big and intimate at the same time, and Superchunk took advantage of that energy. Fans pressed close to the stage while the balcony crowd bounced along above, giving the whole place a loose, celebratory vibe.
What has always set Superchunk apart is their consistency. Since forming in Chapel Hill in 1989, they have stayed fiercely independent while still influencing waves of bands that came after them. Watching them now, it is clear that nothing about their approach has softened. The guitars still roar, the hooks still hit, and the band clearly still loves being on stage together.
By the end of the set, the crowd at the Gothic was fully locked in, shouting along and soaking up every last note. After all these years, Superchunk continues to prove that longevity in indie rock does not have to come with nostalgia alone. Sometimes it just means the band is still very, very good at what they do.
