Interview With The Band Streets of Laredo

Recently, I got on the phone with Dan from Streets of Laredo to talk about their album, their tour and our mutual love of Neil Finn. This kiwi band is actually the culmination of several other bands when brothers Dan and Dave came together to make new music. Disillusioned from his successful band Elemeno P, older brother/drummer Dave called it quits on the music business. But he was drawn out of early retirement after he saw younger brother Dan suffering from the same disillusionment, but from the position of a struggling artist.

Streets of Laredo - Band Interview

Tell me how Streets of Laredo was born?

We both were both pretty much over music and had 9-5 type jobs. My brother Dave came over and we started messing around with new music… all of a sudden we had five songs, and thought – hey, we can turn this into something different. Out of total blind faith, we picked up and moved to Brooklyn and it just worked out for us. The pieces all came together. We live in Bushwick and just started playing in bars around there. People seemed to like us, we kept meeting people. We ended up getting a residency at the ACE hotel and things just took off from there. Our full-length album Wild came out this year.

So, yeah… you are from New Zealand. My favorite musician of all time is Neil Finn.

No way! He is incredible. Split Enz, Crowded House. I think he is such a great songwriter.

But you feel at home in New York City?

Yes. It’s been great for us, obviously. Like I said, we had no idea how it would work out, but we are glad we did it.

How does the dynamics work in the band, with you being family?

In a lot of ways, being brothers allows you to be straight up with each other. You can be honest and not worry about hurting feelings. This is super helpful when you are running out of time and money – you just are blunt and get things done. Of course, there are also times when we just need to turn off the music and be family members.

You start your tour in Denver. What’s the live show like?

We love playing live and really try to connect with the people who come out. The music reflects the last couple years of of our lives, so it feels real and raw, and hopefully something the crowd can relate to. Plus, we do have some funny people in the band, and there is always quite a bit of joking going on between us all – which makes the shows fun.

You have been to Denver before. What did you like best?

We actually played at Larimer Lounge last time too. I remember there was this incredible spot to get tacos right across the street. I need to go back to that place.

Note: Dan will be happy to know that, after a brief closure, Cold Crush is back open for business.

Streets of Laredo hits Denver on Monday, November 7th. Check out them there, or other cities listed below. Also, here is the fun video for their single “Silly Bones.”
