Clap Your Hands Say Yeah at Bluebird Denver
If you were cruising through indie playlists in the mid-2000s, there’s a good chance Clap Your Hands Say Yeah popped up with their jangly, off-kilter charm. The band burst onto the scene in 2005 with a self-titled debut that became a word-of-mouth sensation, thanks to the unique voice of frontman Alec Ounsworth and a DIY ethos that made them stand out. Without a major label, they managed to generate serious buzz — pretty impressive in the pre-streaming world. Their track “The Skin of My Yellow Country Teeth” became a sort of hipster anthem, full of nervous energy and sincerity.
Over the years, the band evolved, with several lineup changes and a shifting sound that leaned into synths, introspection, and layered production. Through it all, Ounsworth remained the core, carrying the band’s spirit with his unmistakable warble and cryptic lyrics.
Seeing them live is still a treat — intimate venues, raw energy, and a crowd that knows every word. Recently, they visited us here in Denver at the Bluebird Theater to play celebrate the 20th anniversary of their first album, giving longtime fans a nostalgia trip and newer fans a crash course in indie history. (By the way, how does 2005 = twenty years ago?)
While they may not be household names, they’ve carved out a lasting legacy on their own terms. Clap Your Hands Say Yeah is a band that has quietly kept going — and that’s worth clapping for.
