Hanson at Denver’s Ogden Theatre for Alice In Winterland
Sure, I liked the band Hanson’s song “MMM Bop” when it came out – who didn’t? But I have also liked all the albums that followed. People are sometimes surprised when I tell them how these guys are one of my favorite bands, given my propensity for indie stuff – but if you really listen to the music, there is no convincing needed. Then you add their live show … holy cow. In the case of Hanson headlining Alice 105.9‘s annual “Alice In Winterland” – you get one of my favorite concerts in all of 2019.
Even more fun – opener Joshua & The Holy Rollers is fronted by younger Hanson brother Mac, who could probably be more mistaken for Jason Momoa, and they certainly packed the punch of budding rock superheros to start the show. Next up was Paul McDonald, a very talented but definitely more tempered performer. I’d like to see him come round again in an intimate singer-songwriter venue.
Hanson performed a mix of their hits, deep cuts, new songs and Christmas faves. You can guess from my enthusiasm above, after I finished photographing, I was in the crowd singing along with every. single. one.
They finish out the “Wintry Mix” tour this weekend and then they’ll play their sold-out “Back To The Island” Festival in January. I’m making a note to get on that waiting list for next year…
