Soul Rocker Michael Franti at Red Rocks
Many times my music posts aren’t your typical concert reviews, because the photos are my main priority, and also – I almost always come from the position of a fan rather than a music critic. This was especially true for Michael Franti’s return to Red Rocks this summer.
It was sentimental for me because Franti was my son’s first “grown-up” concert, albeit one of his fantastic matinee shows geared towards kids. My sister and her family are also huge fans and rarely miss a show when the Spearhead crew come through my home state of Maryland.
So, I was thrilled to finally photograph the man, at the best concert venue on earth, no less.
For soulrockers, I don’t need to explain how great they were. A fantastic combination of talented musicians, positive energy, and good fun. Michael was all over the amphitheatre, before and during the show, performing scheduled meet & greets as well as surprise songs in various parking lots. It’s absolutely clear he loves his fans, loves music and loves life.
Opener Zella Day was also a joy – commanding the stage with her sultry voice and slinky dance moves. I look forward to seeing more from her as well.
