New Edition at Red Rocks
New Edition, a name synonymous with the evolution of R&B, first took the music scene by storm in the early 1980s. The Boston-based group, formed by childhood friends Bobby Brown, Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, Ronnie DeVoe, and Ralph Tresvant, quickly gained fame with hits like “Candy Girl” and “Cool It Now.” Their fresh sound and boyish charm made them instant icons, paving the way for the boy band craze that followed.
As the years went on, New Edition became a breeding ground for some of the biggest names in music. Bobby Brown’s solo career exploded in the late ’80s, and Bell Biv DeVoe – featuring Ricky, Michael, and Ronnie – gave us unforgettable hits like “Poison.” Despite their side projects and occasional breakups, the group always found a way to reunite and remind fans why they were the original architects of the modern boy band.
Fast forward to today, and New Edition is still setting stages on fire. Their most recent tour, which wrapped up to sold-out crowds, was a masterclass in nostalgia and showmanship. It was hard not to dance along as they belted out timeless tracks while showing off their signature moves. I was in absolute awe watching from the pit at Red Rocks. It was definitely one of the highlights of my year so see the full band, including Johnny Gill. (Sadly, Michael Bivens was sick during our show, so he sang from the back – but he was still there!)
Whether you’re a lifelong fan or a new listener, New Edition’s legacy is undeniable. Their ability to adapt while staying true to their roots is a testament to their talent and dedication. Catch them live if you can—because when New Edition hits the stage, it’s not just a concert – it’s a celebration of R&B history!
