I was honored to have a press pass for President Obama’s recent stop in Denver. North Denver, in fact, right on the edge of Sloan’s Lake. (Yes, we do have water here in Denver).
It was the morning after his first debate with Mitt Romney, and everyone was fired up. If you watched the debate, you know the president wasn’t entirely on his game – but, personally, I think he was a little taken back by the complete reversal of platform Mitt Romney was presenting. I loved the jokes on Twitter: “Oh yeah, Romney is a job-creator… for fact checkers.”
My experience at the campaign rally was really interesting… receiving a White House press pass, doing the full secret service pat down (understandably, of course – and kind of fun!), then ending up at long tables full of power cords with people from all nations covering the event. I felt incredibly sorry for folks from out of town who arrived to Denver’s 80 degree weather and didn’t expect our quick change climate. It was maybe 30 when I sat down in my four layers of fleece. Those dudes didn’t stand a chance in their blazers and light scarfs.
My first surprise was when Will.i.am walked out on a stage about 20 feet from me. My credentials had come through pretty late the night before, and to be honest, I had not read the agenda very closely. Yes. Will.i.am from Black Eyed Peas was standing next to me at 9am attempting to get the crowd going in freezing weather with really really loud music. Mixed success in that, hello, we are Denver, we don’t dance even at concerts that we pay to go see, but bless the man for trying.
After our dance party, Federico Peña and Mark Udall spoke, both laying out the theme of “Who was that guy last night?” Not referencing Obama, but Romney. I live tweeted their speeches, and some of my favorite points:
“I was at the debate last night, I was so proud of the president. He told the truth. The truth COUNTS.” – Federico Peña
“Apparently Romney remade himself last night. I call him ‘The NEW Mitt Romney’ – Do you believe him??” – Federico Peña
“We don’t need someone whose answer to immigration is to ask people to self-deport” – Federico Peña
“I hear Paul Ryan likes to climb 14ers, although I gotta say, I am not clear on how many.” – Mark Udall
“Romney spoke poorly about European financial models last night. But the Romney style plan did not work there either, the Austerity Plan.” – Mark Udall
“You are for the DREAM act? You are for a women’s right to decide on her own health care? Are you for wind energy in CO? – Mark Udall
My favorite: as our Coloradans were speaking, national media were asking ME who they were. The lady next to me and I shared a secret smile like… DUH. You drove down Peña Boulevard getting here didn’t you? I leaned over and whispered to her, “the best part is, I am a MOM BLOGGER.”
No, here is the best part. She and I both tweeted that, and someone who follows both of us connected the dots. We had not introduced each other, but I found out through Neil Corman that she is Megan Verlee, who works for Colorado Public Radio.
I LOVE THE INTERNET.
I also fell in love with the woman who introduced Obama. She is a single mom who put herself through college to the Master’s level and her son is now in college via a mixture of Pell Grants and a scholarship as Metro State’s MASCOT. Now I want to go to their home games and cheer him on. Woot!
NEXT UP: OBAMA.
And the man was FIRED UP.
My guess is he had ones of those nights. Where he went over the debate in his head, and he wished he could go back in time and let Romney have it for the lies.
(Oh yes, PLEASE, Mr. President, take him DOWN at the next debate.)
He definitely was ready to go at the rally in Denver:
“When I got to Denver, I met this very spirited fellow who CLAIMED to be Mitt Romney.” – Barack Obama
“This country doesn’t succeed when the rich get richer. We grow from the middle out.” – Barack Obama
“Everybody gets a fair share, everybody plays by the same rules.” – Barack Obama
“Romney said he would cut the deficit without tax cuts, without cuts to corporate welfare… but when asked how – only thing he says he would cut is … PBS???” – Barack Obama
“I had no idea that Big Bird was behind the deficit???” – Barack Obama
“It will be interesting to see what the guy who was playing Mitt Romney last night will say about Iraq the next time we meet.” – Barack Obama
“Here in America, we believe we are all in this together. We can do this together. You understand that Denver.” – Barack Obama
“I have always said change takes time, more than one man, more than one party, we all have to work together.” – Barack Obama
Yeah, clearly I am an Obama fan, but I was inspired. Not just because I am scared of Romney’s policies… but because I genuinely like this man. I agree with a lot of Clinton’s policies, love to hear him speak policy, but I never really LIKED him.
Obama is the whole package for me. Family man and political leader.
Clearly others in the crowd agreed with me.
NOW is the time folks. Make SURE you are registered to vote. Volunteer. Do what you can.
Or, watch the NSFW video from Samuel L. Jackson and, well. You know.
