Slim Cessna’s Auto Club and Strange Americans at Levitt Denver
Levitt Denver has done a great job this summer of pairing local Denver bands with national acts that come through for their free concert series. However, in the case of Slim Cessna’s Auto Club, they had a local act that is so big they could be the headliner themselves. If you have never seen the Slim Cessna crew live, it’s definitely an experience. The band calls themselves “gothabilly” but I am not sure they fit in any genre. Lead singers Slim Cessna and Munly often come out into the crowd (and stalk us photographers) all while the rest of band powers on. There is dancing and prowling and laughing – and mostly, lots of great music.
Openers Strange Americans are also quickly becoming one of my favorite local bands. The first time I saw them live I thought they seemed like the BoDeans and Lucero had a baby – that is a very high compliment, I promise. Those guys play again this weekend at the Englewood Block Party, but I am sure they will add more Denver dates soon.
As for Slim Cessna, I recently photographed them again opening for Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats at Red Rocks (photos coming soon), and they head back out on tour through the Midwest this fall, culminating with three nights back here in Denver for New Year’s Eve. That sounds like a damn fun way to ring in 2019.
