Top 10 Free Things to Do in Denver
Denver might be known for craft beer and mile-high price tags, but many of the best things in the city are totally free. Whether you’re a broke student, a savvy traveler, or just someone who enjoys a good bargain with a view, Denver’s got a stash of free gems worth exploring. From blue bears to golden domes, here’s your go-to guide for having a blast on a budget in the Mile High City.
1. Stroll Through the Denver Botanic Gardens on Free Days
Normally it costs to sniff the roses, but on select days, the Denver Botanic Gardens flings open its gates for free. It’s like a spa day for your eyeballs, minus the cucumber water.
2. Hike the Red Rocks Trails (Then Pretend You’re Performing There)
Red Rocks isn’t just for epic concerts. You can hike its gorgeous trails for free – and if you happen to burst into your best Bono impression near the stage, I won’t judge you.
3. Explore the Denver Art Museum (Free for CO Residents on First Saturdays)
Channel your inner artsy hipster and wander through world-class exhibits. Bonus: the building itself looks like it was designed by a space-age origami master.
4. Visit the Colorado State Capitol (and Stand Exactly One Mile High)
Climb the steps to the “One Mile Above Sea Level” marker and feel like a literal mile-high overachiever. Tours are free and filled with shiny gold dome facts.
5. Window Shop (and People-Watch) on the 16th Street Mall
Hop on the free MallRide and cruise down the newly renovated 16th Street (they dropped the “Mall” part but I am not sure I ever will), where art installations, street performers, shops and cafes await. It’s a great spot to grab a bench and play “Tourist or Local?”
6. Say Hello to Big Blue Bear at the Convention Center
He’s 40 feet tall, peeking into the building like he forgot his keys inside. Snap a selfie with this giant cutie and also check out the beautiful Performing Arts Complex next door.
7. Catch a Free Concert At Levitt Pavilion
During the summer, Levitt provides over 40 free shows (and a few ticketed ones). The lawn is great to spread out and let the kids run, or you can get right up close to the stage and really rock out.
8. First Friday Art Walks in the Santa Fe Arts District
On the first Friday of every month, the galleries along Santa Fe come alive with free art, live music, and wine you pretend to swirl like a sommelier. Come for the art, stay for the funky vibes.
9. Hang Out at Union Station
This historic train station is a total vibe, with high ceilings, plush couches, and AC you didn’t have to pay for. Sip your coffee slowly and soak up the ambiance like a budget-friendly boss.
10. Watch the Sunset from Sloan’s Lake
Wrap up your day with a sunset stroll around Sloan’s Lake. It’s where joggers, kayakers, and ducks live in perfect harmony. The skyline views are straight out of a screensaver.
