Honestly, life is weird. And crazy. And unexpected.
I learned this over the last two years, in many ways.
For example. Remember when I was in New York City a few years ago and – wait for it – I ripped the corneas off my eyes? Not sure I will ever forget trying to flag down a cab while half blind.
And then I sold my half of my company. That wasn’t exactly a surprise since I had to think long and hard about it – but if you had asked me five years ago if that was going to happen, I would have called you bonkers.
And of course, one of the biggest surprises of my life was my ear infection – something I have talked about a lot. I don’t mean to go on and on about it, but even now, when I tell someone new what happened, the look of shock on their face – that I almost died from an ear infection?
It’s just plain crazy.
I also have described how we went uninsured this summer – for medical insurance. I am not happy or proud about it but, you do what you have to do.
One insurance we *have* managed to hang on to is life insurance. We purchased it through our auto insurance agent when we bought our first house – making sure each other could pay the mortgage, you know – just in case.
And of course, we upped it when Declan came along ten years ago.
I decided to join this campaign because it wasn’t to sell you any specific life insurance. It was to remind you that crazy things happen, and that is what life insurance is there for. You never know.
I was talking to my husband recently and matter-of-factly told him I was probably going to die first. I mean, come on – look at all this crazy stuff that happens to me. (I also probably should have mentioned how I nearly died giving birth to our son too.)
Point being, *I* don’t have a death wish, but it sure feels that way sometimes.
He laughed and said, “No way. Look at all the women in your family. This crazy stuff goes way back and you all make it through just fine. You are all strong as oxes.”
Now, while I work on my husband to never ever ever call me an ox again, I think he is probably right. I’ll be fine. But just in case – I am glad we have things in place to protect him if he is wrong.
