Flobots at Levitt Denver
Flobots are one of those rare Denver bands that managed to blend activism, hip-hop, and a full rock setup into something totally their own – and made it catchy too. Formed in the early 2000s, they broke out nationally with their 2007 album Fight with Tools, thanks to the instantly recognizable anthem “Handlebars.” I also feel very lucky to also call the band members my friends.
Flobots are making a habit of playing Levitt Pavilion on 4th of July, and I couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate the current state of America than with a protest-like concert. Through lineup changes and the evolution of their sound, core members Jamie Laurie (Jonny 5), Stephen Brackett (Brer Rabbit), Andy Guerrero (Andy Rok) and Kenny O have kept the heart of the band beating strong.
What really sets Flobots apart is their mission-driven spirit. They’ve always been more than a band; they’re a movement. You could catch them dropping verses about social justice one moment and jamming with the kids from School of Rock next. It’s like Rage Against the Machine met a debate team and brought a string section.
But don’t let all the seriousness fool you – there’s also joy in what they do. They’re playful, theatrical, and full of surprises live. Where else are you going to get a freestyle rap, a trumpet solo, and a full audience shout-along about infrastructure? Nowhere but a Flobots show.
Whether you’re a longtime fan or just catching on, Flobots remind you that music can move your feet and your brain at the same time. And really… who doesn’t want to ride their bike with no handlebars?
