Nothing But Thieves & Kid Kapichi at Summit Denver
I can’t remember how many times I have seen Nothing But Thieves by now, but I have been lucky enough to photograph them a bunch. They returned to Denver recently after releasing their latest album, Dead Club City, in 2023.
Formed in 2012 in Essex, Nothing But Thieves swiftly emerged in the alternative rock scene. The quintet is made up of vocalist Conor Mason, guitarists Joe Langridge-Brown and Dominic Craik, bassist Philip Blake, and drummer James Price. NBT’s musical style is a blend of alt, rock, and electronic elements, marked by Conor’s distinctive and emotive vocals. But the crazy thing? He sounds even better live.
The new album feels maybe a little more pop than past albums, but not much, and still keeps that alternative edge. The setlist was a great mix of old faves and new songs. And, of course, the very packed crowd pretty much sang along with every word.
In some ways, I will admit I’m glad the band are not as big here in America as they are in other parts of the world – because we still get them at reasonably sized venues like The Summit (a venue that gets better with every upgrade – it’s hard not to have a good sightline in there these days!). Maybe that’s why the band keeps the lights low? Do they like that intimate feel too?
Either way, it made for a great night. Opener Kid Kapichi was a perfect fit and made me laugh as well. Always a bonus!
Nothing But Thieves finish out 2023 in at home in England – and then set out across Europe in 2024, as well as joining some Green Day shows (not Denver, though). As sad as I am that we probably won’t see them again next year, I absolutely look forward to their next stop in Denver!
