Peter Hook & The Light at Ogden Theatre Denver

Peter Hook, the iconic bassist of Joy Division and New Order, has had a storied career that’s made him a legend in post-punk and alternative music. Known for his distinctive, melodic bass lines, Hook helped define the sound of two of the most influential bands of the late 20th century. Starting with Joy Division in the late 1970s, he contributed to haunting tracks like “Love Will Tear Us Apart,” which remains a classic of the era. Following the tragic loss of Joy Division’s frontman Ian Curtis, Hook and the other members transitioned to form New Order, blending post-punk with electronic music to craft hits like “Blue Monday.” Both bands were very formative for me growing up, and I never got to see them live, so I was so excited to see his latest band, Peter Hook & The Light, here in Denver recently.

As you can see by the concert set list below, they performed music from both Joy Division and New Order’s discography, which thrilled me to no end. Hook’s bass was front and center, revving with the raw energy of his early days. Whether it’s the dark, driving rhythms of Joy Division or the synth-pop anthems of New Order, the show was a tribute to a lifetime in music.

Hook’s straightforward personality shines on stage and he shared anecdotes about his past, making the experience feel like an intimate conversation. For longtime followers, it was a rare chance to reconnect with a legend who shaped our music tastes, while for newcomers, it was a perfect introduction to post-punk royalty. After I was done photographing, I got lost in the crowd, singing along to so many of my favorite songs.

The band finishes up 2024 in the UK, and then they will be back on tour in Europe and the USA in 2025. Definitely catch this show if you can!
