I often talk about how Rob Drabkin is the first Denver musician I ever met in person, although neither of us can remember exactly when that was. It has to be over a decade now, at least, and I try to photograph at least one or two of his shows a year. My favorite one to catch is his annual birthday show – which is usually in January, but was pushed back a month this year.
The famous Bluebird Theater on Colfax was filled with friends and fans of Rob – plus his dad, who joins him on stage to riff on saxophone. Also, Rob’s mom always brings out a piece of cake so we can sing happy birthday.
But the heart of a Rob Drabkin show is Rob. He is an emotional singer, with songs from the heart.
It’s March 3rd, which in Denver is celebrated as 303 Day (our main area code). All over the city, local talented is highlighted and honored. This 303 Day, I give thanks for my oldest friend in the Denver music scene and wish him all the best for 2018.
Rob will be at the DU Illegal Pete’s tonight for 303 Day and be sure to check out his latest single, the haunting “Love Ends, Fear Begins.”
