Simple Minds, Soft Cell and Modern English at Ball Arena
Simple Minds, the Scottish band that captured hearts in the ’80s with their anthemic, synth-driven sound, decided to mount a tour this year aptly titled Alive and Kicking. They asked fellow New Wave legends Soft Cell and Modern English to join them and the three bands recently visited us at Ball Arena. The show served at KOOL 105.1‘s “Kool Koncert” for 2025 and it seems like every person I know in Denver was here. I was thrilled to photograph each set and then return to my seat to dance the night away with pals.
Modern English was up first. This British new wave band is best known for their hit single “I Melt With You,” which became a defining anthem of the 1980s. Modern English has remained a beloved cult act and their live shows are a nostalgic trip for fans, mixing classic hits with their newer material (including 2024’s 1234 album) – yet always maintaining that signature energy that first captured the hearts of music lovers decades ago.
Next was Soft Cell, the iconic British synth-pop duo, who first made waves in the early ’80s with that memorable hit “Tainted Love.” Formed by Marc Almond and Dave Ball, the band quickly gained a reputation for their innovative blend of electronic music and glam-infused visuals. I had never seen them live, so I didn’t know what to expect. Their set was a celebration of their genre-defining legacy, Almond’s theatrical presence, and Ball’s lush synths.
Finally, Simple Minds. Formed in Glasgow in 1977, the band initially played post-punk before evolving into a new wave powerhouse. Their U.S. breakthrough came with their 1985 album Once Upon a Time, which included the iconic track “Don’t You Forget About Me” from The Breakfast Club.
Over the years, Simple Minds became known for their powerful live performances, blending soaring vocals with infectious rhythms and grandiose production. I honestly cannot believe how great Jim Kerr’s voice still sounds. Concerts are where this band truly shines, with originals Jim and Charlie Burchill, as well as long time tour members Ged Grimes, Sarah Brown, Gordy Goudie, Cherisse Osei and Erik Ljunggren.
Their live show continues to capture the energy and charisma that made them a household name, proving that Simple Minds are much more than just a product of the ’80s – they’re a timeless band whose legacy continues to thrive. Whether you’re a fan from the original wave or someone discovering their music now, a Simple Minds concert promises a great night out that brings the past and present together in perfect harmony.
