Squeeze and X at The Arvada Center
Squeeze is one of those bands that everyone loves. I grew up listening to them, most notably the Cool For Cats album which still remains one of my favorites. When Babylon and On was released, I was a senior in high school and working at a music store in the mall. For years I could recite the SKU numbers for albums released during that time frame – including that one … although to be honest, it took my 17-year-old son to teach me the lyrics to “Hourglass,” um, just this past year.
See, he loves Squeeze too and not just because we force-fed the band down his throat while he was growing up. There is genuine admiration for Squeeze’s fun pop songs and pretty melodies – and a lot of our faves don’t even cross over.
So when the band announced their “The Difford and Tilbrook Songbook 2019” tour and they were stopping at the Arvada Center just north of Denver, I knew we were going as a family.
X opened the show. Exene’s raspy voice pairs perfectly with John Doe’s bass, while Billy Zoom played guitar and sax from a chair to the side. DJ Bonebrake filled out the quartet with pounding drums. I like to listen to people in the beer line, and plenty of folks were there to see X too.
Squeeze started with Footprints from the Babylon album and pretty much played hit after hit all night long – as evidenced by the setlist below. After I was done photographing, we danced on the lawn (yes, even the 17-year-old) till the very last note. Everyone around us was doing the same and pretty much shout-singing every single song. Also, I had seen Squeeze once back in the day, and I am pretty sure Glenn Tilbrook sounds even better now.
Need more proof that everyone loves Squeeze? Dave Grohl (yes, Foo Fighters Dave Grohl) surprised everyone when he joined them on drums for “Black Coffee in Bed” at the Bourbon & Beyond festival in Kentucky this past Saturday.
Check out my photos of Squeeze and X, as well as my Squeeze faves playlist below. The band heads back to the UK and Ireland for the rest of fall and then Australia in early 2020!
