The Velveteers - Denver Concert Photos and Review - Bluebird Theater

The Velveteers at Bluebird Denver

People often ask me what bands I think will be the next to break big out of Denver. In the past few years, The Velveteers has always been on my list – and it’s totally happening. Our resident psychedelic rock heroes have toured with Greta Van Fleet and The Black Keys – and even appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Recently, they played back here at Denver’s Bluebird Theater, and I doubt we’ll have them at such small venues much longer.

The Velveteers is comprised of a trio: Demi Demitro, Baby Pottersmith, and Jonny Fig, who have been together for over a decade. In fact, they played my stage at Westword Music Showcase the first year I hosted one – so my adoration of the band goes way back.

Pottersmith and Fig pull off something fairly unique – dual wailing drums that somehow complement each other yet still sound very fast and very loud. Add Demi’s incredible vocals and guitar; there is literally no way their shows can’t get you dancing.

And the wall-to-wall crowd at Bluebird complied, with some moshing and crowd surfing included. (Demi pulled that off herself, as well.) I saw many longtime pals from the Denver music scene at the show – but I also ran into friends of my kid – who have grown up hearing bands like this and now go out on their own to see them. Everyone is cheering our Colorado locals, and I’m so glad to see all that hard work The Velveteers have done is paying off.

Check out their latest single, “See Me,” and their surprise homemade video for the song “Choking.”
