Every year, Denver Westword puts on a crazy extravaganza called Artopia. It's a celebration of art, culture and fashion at The Church, which - if you have never been - is inside what formerly was an actual church. Dozens of artists paint, sculpt and perform throughout…
Denver Zombie Crawl returned to the Mile High City with a vengeance this year. Sure, since the date for the event was a bit earlier than normal there was perhaps a bit lighter attendance (not much), but our Colorado undead were no less enthusiastic. In fact, I would say the commitment to blood was over the top in 2017. Not surprisingly, the costume we saw the most often was CLOWNS ... and given my great fear of them, I hid behind my camera all day. Besides the clowns, I love how Zombie Crawls brings all the Denverites out. It's such a diverse event that you can adapt for yourself. We go with our best friends and the kids, but later in the night head out adults-only for the after-parties. It's an awesome Colorado event that has something for everyone.
Every year, when I attend Denver Comic Con, I try to lurk in the shadows. Mainly because I like catching people in candid moments rather than setting them up all posey-posey. Not that there is anything wrong with smiling straight into the camera for photos - I just love observing the wide variety of people at DCC and how they interact with each other. 2017 brought the geek out for 115,000 attendees and again makes Denver the third largest Comic Con in the country (behind San Diego and New York). There were some rule changes and lots of space reorganization that bewildered folks at first (including me) - but once we got the hang of it, all was well.

It's that time of year again! We are close to Halloween, which means Zombie Crawl takes over Denver's 16th Street Mall with some really outrageously creepy costumes. Given the state of our election, I expected an onslaught of Trumps, but only saw a few and they always had a Hillary on their arm. The zombie zeitgeist this year was full-on Day of the Dead, with multiple examples up and down the mall. It's the 11th anniversary of Denver Zombie Crawl and this year it also fell squarely on founder Danny Newman's birthday. Personally, I can't think of a better present than tens of thousands of costumed creatures taking over downtown.
