Me? A Soccer Mom? You Betcha.

I have to be honest with you here. Declan has never been what you might call c-o-o-r-d-i-n-a-t-e-d. He’s getting better with age, all clearly from his dad’s genes and not mine, but in general, he is more of a reading, writing and drawing kind of kid.

So, when friends on the PTA asked him to join their soccer team, we wondered, “Just how bad are they that they want OUR kid?” Turns out they aren’t bad per se – just all the other teams are like mini machines of sporting magnitude with David Beckham for coaches (seriously, half of them were British). While us? Ermm.

Well, I can’t complain. Because we had coaches that taught them skills, let them be boys and have a great time on the field. Our coaches noticed their strengths and worked on their weaknesses (Declan’s main weakness being actually running after the ball) – but mostly just encouraging FUN. So much fun that Bryan signed on as an Assistant Coach.

Win, lose or draw, it *was* a fun season. Watch out, Spring.

Very sweet photo… Having a very um, unconventionally coordinated soccer player myself, I’m glad to hear that you guys all had fun.

Great pic. I am waiting until my kid is slightly more coordinated before I sign him up for soccer. I am afraid he may hurt himself.

At this age, heck – at any age, it should be about fun.

    FWIW – I’m a hockey mom now. Dontcha know…

The point is to have fun. Always. If it ceases to be fun on some level, who wants to do it?

Cute shot, looks like they’re having a blast.

God it snowed here today. No soccer for us. I ended up coaching a recreational league with my uncoordinated boy. He had a blast and he enjoyed it immensely.

What a great photo … great capture of a memorable season!

It has been rough this year (8th grade) because it’s all starting to feel ALOT less fun!

    Enjoy it ….

It was great tromping you guys all season! Keep going for that “fun” angle. Liam loves playing against the teams that play for “fun!” 😉

Seriously, there is some good competition out there and a bunch of great parents. Some more enthusiastic than others.

It’s fun to see Ciaran’s team that is 2 years ahead of these guys and how much more coordination all the kids have in that short of a time span. Even the kids who just watched the game go by a year or two ago really get it in 3rd grade and it really becomes fun, albeit more competitive, then!
