Biffy Clyro at The Federal Denver
There are bands that feel massive in certain corners of the music world without ever fully crossing over into the mainstream in the United States, and Biffy Clyro has always felt like one of those bands to me. The Scottish trio has been hugely beloved overseas for years, building a fiercely loyal fanbase through giant choruses, emotional songwriting, and an absolutely relentless live show. Somehow, despite wanting to see them forever, I had never managed to catch them live until their April 2026 stop at the semi-new Federal Theatre.
It ended up being one of those nights where the anticipation in the room was almost as noticeable as the performance itself. The crowd at the Federal was packed with longtime fans who clearly had history with this band. It had that cult-band energy where we all felt like we were part of the same secret club.
And Biffy completely delivered.
From the second they hit the stage, the energy barely let up. Simon Neil was constantly moving while the full band sounded huge all night long. Biffy has always balanced heavy riffs with surprisingly emotional songs, and that mix really came through live. But Neil’s voice is one of those that sound much better live – the Scottish grit gets you right in the feels.
This was also my first time photographing a show at the Federal, even though I’ve attended concerts there before. It’s an interesting room to shoot in – intimate enough that the audience energy really surrounds the band, but the lighting setup can definitely be challenging.
Biffy’s set leaned heavily into intense backlighting, deep color washes, and fast changes that looked fantastic in person but made photography a bit of an adventure. A lot of the night involved chasing tiny moments between bursts of light and shadow. The kind of show where you know you are going to throw away a lot of frames, but the ones you keep feel worth it.
That actually matched the mood of the performance too. Nothing about the set felt overly polished or safe. It felt loud, sweaty, chaotic, emotional, and very human in the best possible way.
After waiting this long to finally see Biffy Clyro live, they absolutely lived up to the hype. Some bands develop devoted followings because of nostalgia or image. Biffy’s crowd feels earned because the band puts everything they have into the live show, and the audience gave it right back.
The band is supporting their excellent 2025 album Futique and head back to Europe for the rest of 2026. Definitely catch them if you can!
