Bikini Kill at Mission Ballroom

Bikini Kill burst onto the punk scene in the early ‘90s, bringing with them an unapologetic feminist message that challenged the status quo. Formed in Olympia, Washington, the band consists of Kathleen Hanna (vocals), Tobi Vail (drums), Kathi Wilcox (bass), and touring guitarist Sara Landeau. Their loud, raw sound and politically charged lyrics helped ignite the Riot Grrrl movement, a feminist punk rock revolution that gave women a space in a male-dominated scene.

Known for their raucous live shows, Bikini Kill encouraged women to come to the front and take up space. Their iconic songs like “Rebel Girl” and “Double Dare Ya” became anthems for a generation of women (like myself!) fed up with societal norms.

I was so thrilled to finally see them here in Denver at our Mission Ballroom. It’s another band that I have no idea how I missed seeing them back in the 90s, but I made up for it singing along with the huge crowd – who were just as happy to see them as I was. Hanna’s stage presence is fierce, and the band’s message of empowerment continues to resonate. Bikini Kill’s music still feels urgent and necessary, making them as important today as they were in the 90s.

If you get the chance to see them live, expect a cathartic, high-energy show filled with passion and purpose. Bikini Kill may have started a revolution decades ago, but they’re proving it’s far from over. Long live riot grrrls!
