Funny Pregnancy Book: Let’s Panic About Babies! (+ Giveaway!)

My son is now 8 years old. But when I was pregnant for my first and only time, I consumed baby how-to books. When I say consume, I mean I read them in every spare moment, carried a highlighter around in my pocket, and forced my husband to memorize the passages I deemed important.

I had never babysat, never hung around children, and I changed my first diaper almost exactly 1 year before I got pregnant. Not many of my friends were having kids yet – in fact, my college roommate was pretty much it, and she was the one who let me haphazardly try to change her baby’s soiled laundry, which clearly shows her level of confusion was on par with mine.

Flash forward to now. I am still pretty clueless, but at least I care a whole lot less.

Don’t get me wrong. I love that little bugger more now than ever. It just don’t sweat the small stuff as much. Granted, it’s easier to not sweat it when they can feed, dress, and bathe themselves, AND I am sure I will be just as OCD over college applications when the time comes… Point being, I wish I’d had something like Alice and Eden’s book to balance out the hysteria when *I* was pregnant.

Let’s Panic About Babies is sarcastic, it’s funny, it’s hip – and it taught my son what a Trapper Keeper was when he flipped through those pages himself. (Which I really don’t advise. My husband walked in on Declan reading the part about skinny teenage girls being irresponsible sluts* and threw the book at my head.**)

*true.
**not true.

Would you like to check it out, too?

I have THREE copies of LET’S PANIC ABOUT BABIES to give away.

You must be in the US or Canada – sorry Ukrainian preggos – and must be willing to give me your snail mail address. You also must be willing to comment on this post, because, duh, how else would I know you want the book?

I will pick 3 random winners this Friday!

So tell me, what are YOUR funniest moments from pregnancy or motherhood?

_________________________________________________________

Blogger disclaimer: I received a review copy of the book for free, but of course I am an idiot and forgot that I had pre-ordered the book myself, and that one is on its way too. Good news, Alice and Eden! One for EACH of you to sign!

Well, recently my nearly 2 year old has taken to calling me “honey,” since I refer to her as “honey” so often.

  2. Megan

I want one! Please please please!

True story: Finished work on a Friday, two weeks before due date, so I could rest up. D+I lounging on the couch, watching Sex in the City re-runs (one of the episodes where Miranda is about to give birth) and … (loud, audible) POP!

LEAPT off the couch so I didn’t leak on it and literally FLEW my prego butt up the stairs shouting at stunned husband still on couch. “My water just broke, going to shower, let’s go to the hospital!” He claims he’s never seen me move so fast. 24 hrs later, our kiddo was born.

This is so gross, but when my mucous plug fell out, I had no idea what it was or why it came out. PANIC.

I called my mother and made her come over and look at it.

This was after I made my husband come home from work.

    *ahem*

My funniest moment(s) so far in pregnancy have to be the five minutes I did standup at the Squire, a dive bar in downtown Denver. I was glad to be able to laugh at myself and make others laugh in the process.

Also, since I only have 18 more days until my due date, if you could pick me as the winner and get my book mailed out by then, that would be great! 😉

I truly don’t remember it being that haphazard 😉

Funniest or most memorable parenting moments? Let’s see, was it the fact that there were literally 14 people in the room when my first son was born (WTF was I thinking??!!) or how the second one fell off the changing table backwards, headfirst into the trashcan below at 3 months old (he’s fine, I’m still scarred) or when I indoctrinated in the Lord of the Rings movies before Kindergarten? I loved it when the pediatrician had to give me permission to stop feeding my 6 month old 20-something pound baby every two hours around the clock because CLEARLY he wasn’t starving. Yeah, I would probably enjoy a copy of this book.

OK, this is TMI, but when my water broke I really did think I was peeing in my chair. REALLY. Like I forgot i was pregnant even.

I am not expecting but my almost sister-in-law is expecting her third (she has twins that will be two on Monday) and I’d love to give her this fun, witty take on parenting!

  11. Everyfann

I have too many poopie diaper stories that are WAY unsuitable for sharing. But i would love a book!

  12. Average Jane

I have no babies and thus no stories. However, I want to win a copy to give to a friend who just had a baby (after I read it myself, of course).

When I was pregnant for the second time, the baby seemed to kick the most when she heard her big (almost two-year-old) sister’s voice. The big girl was convinced that in utero was high-fiving her.

  14. Corrin

I really want a copy of this book. Don’t have kids yet, so I don’t have a story to share. I wish we had kids. For now I just borrow my friend’s children.

My favourite (and most scarring) memory from my first child’s infancy revolves around her being the most colicky child on the face of the planet. We barely slept for 8 or 9 months after she was born. For the (many) night wakings my hubby would go and get the baby, change her, and bring her to me to nurse. Sometime in the first, oh, 2 months, when the sleep deprivation was really getting intense, the baby awoke during the night. I was groggy but awake and waiting for the hubby to bring the babe. After several minutes had gone by and they still had not come (from the room next door) I got up and went looking for them. The room was dark but I could make out my hubby sitting in the rocking chair. “Do you have the baby?” I asked. “Mm-hmmm,” he said sleepily. I squinted and looked closer. The baby was not in his arms and he was 99% asleep. I looked in the crib. No baby. I started to freak the fuck out. Where was the baby??? I whipped around to discover her, fast asleep on the change table. Yes, I realize that could have ended with a fall if she had been able to roll over. Thank goodness it didn’t. When you are so sleep deprived you can lose your baby in a tiny little bedroom.

I’m glad those days are over. But I’ve been waiting for this book to come out and I bet it’s great. I would love to read it!

I haven’t been PG in a while…. but I a thinking that book would still make me laugh.

Going around, nesting, very pregnant, washing sheets thinking “I need to pee as soon as I get this load in.” Start the washer, water begins gushing into the basin and I realize “I’M PEEING! I’M PEEING RIGHT NOW!”
Thankfully at the time our washer was in a utility room with a bathroom.
    Ah, pregnancy.

  18. Chelsea

I have never been pregnant nor am I a mom, but I would love to give this book to my sister in law. Can I still enter? For a funny story, when I was little, I was a very loud child. My mom would take me into public restrooms and I would shout at the top of my lungs, “IT STINKS IN HERE!!” haha ohh what kids say.. 🙂

  19. Kyria

I don’t have kids, but my cousin just had a baby and would love this book!

  20. ~Shari

When I was pregnant with my 1st pregnancy (a girl and I carried her very high) I used to use my huge belly as a table to write checks on.

  21. mmburdette22

Actually I am not a mom yet, but my husband and I are planning on having kids soon. I just hope this book doesn’t panic me too much that I decide to change my mind!

  22. Katie

ONE of my funniest pregnancy moments was being in the car and suddenly barfing into my sister’s sweater that was on my lap. I was drinking water so it wasn’t tooo terrible. But then a couple days later she forgot and WORE IT TO WORK.

I have one girl and we are thinking about having another. Will this scare me off???? LOL.

  24. JennyJo

Me, me, me! I love both of those ladies!

  25. Leask

Despite being a man and being currently unable to be pregnant until “Junior” becomes a reality, I think having a copy of this book would be just swell!

  26. Laura M.

The funniest moment of my pregnancy was my oldest daughter saying she wanted us to name the baby “Vulpix”.
