Gogol Bordello at Denver’s Ogden Theatre
Gogol Bordello calls themselves “gypsy punk.” The term is right on target because they are a troop of free spirits who jump all night and get the whole crowd to stomp along with them. The band is transnational but was formed in New York City in 1999, after various members moved there as teens. Leader Eugene Hütz draws deeply on his Ukrainian roots with his music and lifestyle.
All of this pours into an eclectic, exciting Gogol Bordello concert, every time. Speaking of pouring, those in the front (including photographers) often get a bit doused with the wine bottle Eugene carries as he dashes back and forth on stage.
But when I talk about the dancing, let’s not forget the music. Gogol Bordello features extensive percussion, accordion, and violin along with the standard rock gear. Gogol Bordello truly is magical, musical chaos and I mean that as the utmost compliment.
I was able to see them once before at Riot Fest Denver and they blew me away. In a venue that was almost a touch too small for them? Pretty much mind-blowing. The band continues touring on the east coast of the United States in 2019 – I highly suggest you catch them whenever you can!
