Not So Silent Night Denver – KTCL Channel 93.3’s End of Year Concert
Every year, Denver’s alternative station, KTCL Channel 93.3, throws a holiday party for their fans. It’s called Not So Silent Night, and every year gets more crazy. The 2016 lineup included 888, Jr Jr, The Strumbellas, Kaleo and Empire of The Sun. All of which put on great sets, but I would have to say my favorites were openers 888 and headliners Empire of The Sun.

Denver band 888 won last year’s Hometown For The Holidays contest, and the biggest prize from that is opening next year’s NSSN. But this band didn’t sit around waiting for Christmas. They have been touring just about everywhere and their hit song, “Critical Mistakes” has racked up over 2.2 million listens on Spotify. I can’t wait to see what they are up to for 2017.
Not So Silent Night Proposal!
In between all the music, the DJ’s from KTCL even managed to squeeze in a proposal. It was tense for a few seconds (I think she was in shock), but finally – YES!
Empire of The Sun
The headliner, Empire of The Sun, was a carnival on stage. Literal insanity. I have listened to their music, but I never imagined it would be full-on Cirque Du Soleil with dancers in Jean-Paul Gaultier style costumes. Sometimes, when you have such a stage show, the band is hiding their lack of musical talent. Not so with Empire of the Sun. Lead singer Luke Steele was all over the stage singing and playing guitar, while his partner in crime Nick Littlemore handled pretty much else. No joke. Literal insanity on stage. The good kind.
As I mentioned, the other three bands were killer too. I loved the Christmas spirit, and the Christmas outfits – some of which were pilfered from KTCL staff. Jr Jr, in particular, were playing through illness… The Strumbellas are the embodiment of a band who has fun playing together… and Kaleo. What a crooner.
Already looking forward to next Not So Silent Night here in Denver. The opening act is set; Redlands won the Hometown For The Holidays contest earlier this month… but who else will be there to try and top 2016?
Houston’s NSSN had The Strumbellas – but not the other bands. As always – incredible pictures. You have such a talent…
Thank you so much!
