Pixies Concert Denver - Review and Photos - Mission Ballroom

Pixies at Mission Ballroom Denver

When Pixies came to Denver recently, it would be my third time photographing them – a huge milestone for me, seeing as they have been one of my favorite bands since I was in college. But this one was extra special since it was the first time I captured a headlining show.

The band Pixies formed in Boston in 1986 and have put out eight albums since then, including 2022’s very excellent Doggerel. The band’s unique sound, characterized by a blend of indie rock, punk, and surf music, set them apart as pioneers of the alt rock movement. They are also known for fast and loud shows, which they definitely had going on at the Mission.

Full set list is below, but Black Francis and the band seemed determined to play as many songs as possible, which was perfectly fine by all of us. Some fan videos even caught me dancing while photographing – it’s hard not to.

Along with Black Francis, original members Joey Santiago (lead guitar) and David Lovering (drums) pumped out song after song, along with Paz Lenchantin (bass), who became a permanent member in 2016. It really seemed like the whole crew was happy to be playing together and back to Denver after traveling all over the world post-COVID. Francis’ voice was completely on point and all members are masterful on their respective instruments. I can’t imagine that anyone walked away unhappy that night – I heard many of my fave songs, and they all sounded great.

Pixies will continue touring well into 2024, both in the States and in Europe – including returning to Colorado in September – so grab tickets! Sadly, the Vail show with Modest Mouse and Cat Power is sold out already, but I know we can count on Pixies coming back to Denver when they can.
