The Church & Afghan Whigs at Ogden Denver
I was so excited to see two bands I have long loved – The Church and The Afghan Whigs – play a concert together at Denver’s Ogden Theatre.
The Afghan Whigs, formed in 1986 in Cincinnati, Ohio, have long been celebrated for their unique blend of alternative rock, soul, and grunge. Led by the unmistakable voice of Greg Dulli, the band carved out a niche for themselves in the early ’90s, standing out during the grunge explosion with their moody, emotionally charged music.
After a hiatus starting in 2001, fans thought the Whigs had closed their chapter for good, but in 2012, they made a triumphant return to the stage. Their reunion shows have been an emotional ride for long-time fans, filled with intense performances that showcased not only their past hits but also newer material. Their sound continues to evolve, but their ability to connect with audiences through powerful performances remains as strong as ever.
The Church is an Australian rock band that formed in 1980, known for their dreamy, atmospheric sound. Their blend of jangly guitars, ethereal lyrics, and Steve Kilbey’s distinct vocals has earned them a devoted fan base over the decades. Their 1988 hit, “Under the Milky Way,” remains their most iconic song, a staple of the alternative rock scene and still resonates with listeners today.
Their live shows are known for their immersive quality, drawing audiences into their dreamy soundscapes. Fans from all over the world have flocked to see them perform, with recent tours proving they’ve still got it. Whether it’s playing smaller, intimate venues or outdoor festivals, The Church creates an almost spiritual concert experience.
