Underoath at Ogden Theatre

Have you ever had one of those moments in your life that you keep replaying over in your head because you can’t believe it actually happened? That’s me after having a dream come true getting to photograph my favorite band of 15 years, Underoath, at The Ogden.

For any longtime fan of the band, the release of their album Erase Me was highly anticipated after an eight-year dry spell. In 2013, the band called it quits, but after some much needed time apart, they decided to give it another go. They went on the road for the Rebirth tour in 2016, playing their two most popular albums, They’re Only Chasing Safety and Define The Great Line.

Underoath always seems to have a killer light show to accompany their sets. This time around was no exception, making sure to showcase the bright neon green shade that accents their new album. Unlike a lot of album tours, Underoath chose to play old songs in between the new ones, instead of playing their new album all the way through. And although I enjoy the new album, getting to hear my favorites sprinkled throughout the set is what really made the show for me.

Erase Me is an album about pain, struggle, acknowledgement, and growth. Spencer Chamberlain made a point to talk about this both nights in Denver, hitting on heavy notes that aren’t necessarily easy to hear. The last track on the album, “I Gave Up,” specifically seemed to be one of the most important tracks to him, speaking about how he wanted to give up his life, and instead reached out to Aaron Gillespie, his best friend and bandmate, to tell him he needed help. Those moments and stories from the artists truly make the album all that more special. I thoroughly cannot wait to see what else Underoath creates in the years to come.
