Shinedown and Ayron Jones at Denver’s Mission Ballroom

Shinedown and Ayron Jones at Mission Ballroom

You guys know I love a good rock concert. And Shinedown puts on a GREAT rock concert. The legendary band returned to Denver for the first time since 2019, this time at our new(ish) venue, the Mission Ballroom. Shinedown is supporting their seventh studio album, Planet Zero, out April 22 on Atlantic Records. The tour goes all over the U.S., Europe and Canada (dates listed below) during 2022.

Shinedown front man Brent Smith says of the album and its themes, “If we shut each other down and allow ourselves to be divided by the information we consume and the way we talk to each other, we lose our humanity. Planet Zero was written for all of us. The fact is that we’re all here on this planet no matter what, so it’s time to actually move forward together with empathy, perseverance and strength.”

Brent’s powerful message is backed live by his incredible vocal strength and his band’s musical talent. And as much as love big rock shows, I especially love bands who love playing together. Guitarist Zach Meyers and bassist Eric Bass ran back and forth while drummer Barry Kerch was flailing arms all night. If you have never been to a concert at the Mission, it’s a venue that you can move all around to really see a band from different vantage points, which I happily did after I finished photographing. It sounded great everywhere. The pyrotechnics were an added bonus.

Also, seeing as the last few years have been a vacuum, I wanted to mention that Planet Zero follows Shinedown’s 2018 album ATTENTION ATTENTION, which the band recently brought to life in a feature film. It’s a visual counterpart to the album’s narrative about mental health and the resolve of the human spirit.

One last note: Watch out for Ayron Jones and his band. Those guys won’t be opening for much longer and most certainly will have their own tour very soon. I’m glad I made it there early enough to see them and I highly suggest you do too.

Like I said… a really, really great rock show, all around.
