When we moved to Denver 13 years ago, they had a strange phenomenon going on. Nice Memorial Day weather. Naive us, we planned our wedding for May 26, 1996.
Our friends and family started arriving the Wednesday before… and so did the rain.
I lost my shit.
We were having an outdoor wedding. Here.
My friend Dana finally had to just take the remote away from me so I stopped obsessing over the Weather Channel.
And, yes, folks. It snowed on my wedding day.
It turned out OK, we moved the ceremony indoors next to the fire, and all my photos have this misty, romantic quality to them.
But I really did lose my shit.
And after the big day, whenever you would talk to native Coloradoans about the Memorial Day weather fiasco… all you got was raised eyebrows and: “You planned an outdoor wedding on Memorial Day? The weather is always crap that weekend.”
And in the 11 years since then, almost without fail, it has been crap.
Which is why, this weekend, we’re going away. We happen to be going away separate of each other – but I guess that’s what happens when you are married for 11 years.
But today, I drove past the Ken Caryl hogback on an errand, past the place of our union, and I noticed it was raining.
And I grinned.
While I have never been to CO over that weekend, my parents moved there in Jan 1996 and with them my brother who still lives there.
I have never heard them say a good thing about Memorial day weekend.
HAPPY ANNIVERSARY (a little early)!!!
When I think back to it what I remember is the most beautiful ceremony and yummy mango salsa!
really, a beautiful, beautiful wedding 🙂
(I would’ve lost my shit too.)
OMG. I am so so homesick. Good thing I will be there next week!
Happy Anniversary a wee bit early!
AND I can’t wait to see you Tree!~
And Mar – I don’t remember the salsa… but I remember the mushroom strudel! YUM!
Same goes in the Bozone. We had gorgous weather all last week and the week before. This week, snow and rain and more on the way. Mister and I were discussing, yesterday, how many Memorial Day weekends we’ve spent inside watching it rain or snow.
Happy anniversary. I am so glad that the situation ended up moving our wedding from July to February and outside to inside. I can just imagine the serious loss of my shit that would have happened due to weather!
I had just the opposite happen. Our wedding was in Rochester, NY and it was a mid-September evening. I had on a long-sleeved dress. The girls wore black dresses with white opera length gloves. The guys wore black tuxes. It was 95 degrees in the shade that day. Go freakin’ figure.
Happy Anniversary, friend.
Glad to have found you… where are you going this weekend?
it snowed here on May 22nd, two days ago. nasty, cold, flaky May snow…surreal. i couldn’t figure it out and was feeling bitter, as i was hoping to like, mow my freaking grass and the other dull things i do with my free time, but then i read your post. and now it all makes sense.
so, um, happy anniversary. and can we have spring back now, please?
Happy Anniversary (shared with us!).
Oh, and can I mention that we had beauti-ful weather for our wedding? Literally, birds woke me up by singing outside my bedroom window.
But hey, I don’t want to brag 🙂
