Changing of The Guard

Sometimes I go over blog posts in my head and wonder how self-important I sound. I assume what I'm thinking about right now will come out as very narcissistic and passive aggressive.
Do you ever go through cycles where it feels like a group of people in your life are all leaving at the same time?
I'm old enough where this is has happened several times and parts of it hurt and parts of it, honestly, can be a relief. This time, mostly it hurts because it just feels like losing touch (for whatever reason) rather than a healthy changing of the guard.

Best Songs of 2013

Note: This post is not sponsored or linked to sales sites in any way.  All year long, I have been adding to my favorite songs of 2013 playlist, and it ended up being triple the size of last year's list - over 160 songs total. I love indie and alternative the most, but pop, rock, R&B, soul, funk - you name it - everything is represented. What a great year for music, with a nice Christmas surprise from Beyoncé. (Seriously - watch the videos. They are masterpieces.) I have had a tremendous time photographing bands, and listening to new tunes. Who says the music industry is dead? It is just getting started.

Jealousy

I don't consider myself a jealous person. But of course it comes naturally to everyone, right? That ugly feeling that creeps out of nowhere when you hear something wonderful for friend, and you can't help thinking, "why not me?"
I grew up in a pretty affluent area of Maryland, although we are not part of that crowd. In a lot of ways, I was happy about that because it was much less pressure when you didn't have to have everything all the time. I saw the toll it took on people around me and felt sad when the grass was so much greener that they could not be happy with their situation in life - which was really was quite good, after all.

Riot Fest Denver 2013 – Day 1 Photos

Note: Riot Fest provided tickets for the event but all words and photos are mine. There was a really fun weekend in September where I was able to take my 11 year old son (who just turned 11 that week) to see some of the most amazing bands of my lifetime. Riot Fest was held way east of Denver in a field at May Farms, and all that open sky actually gave me a feeling of agoraphobia. It also gave us a great view of the three massive stages where bands Blink 182, AWOLNation, Public Enemy, Iggy & The Stooges and The Replacements played their faces off for two days.

Happy Everything

This is the holiday photo I used for my company, but the sentiment applies here too. The few years prior to 2013 were a bit rough for my family. But now I work at home, with my dog Poe. I have a lightness that I…

The Bible

Everyone is talking about Duck Dynasty's Phil Roberston and A&E's suspension of him. What is so surprising to me is the wide variety of comments I have seen, and how many people are quoting the bible to me. As far as a general overview of the situation, my friend Kristen Howerton from Rage Against The Minivan covers my feelings quite well. What I am pondering is our modern day fascination with holding on to the bible with both hands, gripping so hard that our knuckles turn white. Why quote it word for word as a road map for our lives when the words themselves are so contradictory? And truthfully many of the passages have no meaning in the here and now. Not to mention they were written down long after they actually happened. Doesn't that leave some margin for error?
